Job Title: Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic supports large-scale solar construction projects by maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of heavy machinery used for site preparation, pile driving, module installation, and material handling. This role ensures equipment reliability, reduces downtime, and keeps field operations running safely and efficiently across active solar project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair heavy equipment used on large-scale solar construction sites, including machinery for site preparation, pile driving, module installation, and material handling.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, diesel, and electrical issues using manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools to identify root causes of equipment problems.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and related components to maximize equipment uptime and extend service life.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, hoses, and cylinders, to ensure safe and efficient equipment operation.
  • Service and repair diesel engines, including fuel systems, cooling systems, and exhaust components, to maintain reliable performance in the field.
  • Address pneumatic system issues, including air lines, fittings, and actuators, to keep equipment operating as designed.
  • Document maintenance and repair activities clearly and accurately to support equipment tracking and compliance with site requirements.
  • Work as a field service resource by traveling within the project site to perform on-site diagnostics and repairs on equipment in operation.
  • Collaborate with site supervision and equipment operators to prioritize repairs and maintenance activities that minimize disruption to construction schedules.
  • Follow all safety procedures and best practices while working on and around heavy equipment in active construction areas.
  • Operate and move equipment as needed to perform inspections, testing, and repairs in outdoor construction environments.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, field service technician, or diesel mechanic, preferably supporting utility-scale solar or construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, including diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance.
  • Extensive experience with hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting and repair of pumps, valves, hoses, and cylinders.
  • Hands-on experience working with pneumatic systems on heavy equipment.
  • Solid understanding of electrical systems and mechanical components used in heavy construction machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, technical schematics, and diagnostic reports.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and resolve mechanical and system issues.
  • Capability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions on large, active construction sites.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with a methodical and safety-focused approach to repairs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting utility-scale solar construction projects is preferred.
  • Experience in construction equipment maintenance and field service work is beneficial.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with operators and site leadership about equipment status and repair needs.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple maintenance and repair tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on preventive maintenance and continuous equipment reliability improvement.

Work Environment

This role is based in an outdoor construction environment on large, active solar project sites. Work is hands-on and field-based, with a strong emphasis on safety practices and proper use of tools and protective equipment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
