Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic

Job Description

The maintenance mechanic supports a strong safety-focused culture while performing a wide range of instrument, mechanical, and electrical maintenance activities in a large food manufacturing environment. This role installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains production equipment, instrumentation, and electrical systems, while using SAP maintenance tools and mobile equipment to ensure reliable and efficient plant operations.

Responsibilities

  • Support and actively participate in a strong safety culture focused on zero injuries and illnesses, consistently following all plant rules and safety requirements.
  • Perform daily maintenance assignments of an instrument, mechanical, or electrical nature, as well as special assignments requested by maintenance leadership and management.
  • Train and develop proficiency in instrument, mechanical, and electrical disciplines to effectively troubleshoot problems and perform accurate and timely repair work.
  • Perform necessary cleaning tasks and maintain good housekeeping practices in all work areas.
  • Use the SAP maintenance management program to write notifications, create work orders, locate stock materials, and review equipment history.
  • Operate company mobile equipment, including forklifts, scissor lifts, and JLG machines, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Replace electric motors, including verifying proper wiring, alignment, protection devices, and rotation.
  • Perform instrumentation tasks such as changing out field controllers, probes, automatic valves, and operators.
  • Calibrate field instruments, including flow meters, temperature probes, pH meters, density meters, pressure transmitters, level transmitters, and other field devices.
  • Perform welding and fabrication functions as needed to support equipment repair and modification.
  • Operate lathes and milling machines to perform required machining functions.
  • Assemble and rig equipment properly to complete repairs safely and effectively.
  • Perform alignment and balancing of equipment to ensure proper operation and reliability.
  • Use specialty hand and shop tools, including volt and amp meters, meggers, DC voltage equipment, hot sticks, static trip test sets, ground fault testers, drills, grinders, cut-off saws, and wrenches.
  • Understand and comply with all plant rules, safety requirements, and applicable standards such as SO and FSSC requirements.
  • Prioritize and organize work efficiently, determining appropriate parts, tools, equipment, and manpower for each assignment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections, safety inspections, and audits as assigned, and provide timely and accurate documentation of findings.
  • Troubleshoot PLC systems and diagnose low, medium, and high voltage electrical problems, identifying and implementing appropriate repairs.
  • Read and understand ladder diagrams and general control circuit systems, and review maintenance documentation for accuracy.
  • Communicate the status of daily assignments to maintenance supervisors, maintenance planners, operations leads, engineers, value stream managers, and the maintenance manager as needed.
  • Respond to plant call-ins to troubleshoot instrumentation, electrical, or mechanical problems and determine when additional assistance is required to complete repairs.
  • Support production equipment uptime by applying electro-mechanical, maintenance mechanic, and PLC technician skills to resolve issues promptly.

Essential Skills

  • Prior instrument, mechanical, and electrical maintenance experience.
  • Experience maintaining low, medium, and high voltage equipment.
  • Experience maintaining analog and digital control systems.
  • Demonstrated effective troubleshooting methods and a record of successful problem resolution.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of hand and shop tools.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 55 lbs., climb ladders, and work at heights.
  • Ability to learn new tasks and assignments and maintain flexibility to support change.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays as required by the schedule and to work overtime when requested.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical systems, AC/DC motors, PLCs, and production equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot PLC systems and electrical issues across various voltage levels.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Instrument Electrical Certification is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of SAP maintenance module is preferred.
  • Experience as an electro-mechanical technician, maintenance mechanic, or PLC technician.
  • Familiarity with calibration of industrial instruments such as flow, temperature, pressure, level, pH, and density devices.
  • Experience operating mobile equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and JLG machines.
  • Comfort reading ladder diagrams and general control circuit schematics.
  • Experience using specialty test equipment, including volt and amp meters, meggers, DC voltage equipment, hot sticks, static trip test sets, and ground fault testers.
  • Welding, fabrication, and machining experience using lathes and milling machines.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage multiple assignments.

Work Environment

The plant maintains a fairly clean working environment and operates with strict safety and quality standards, including compliance with SO and FSSC requirements. You work around production equipment, instrumentation, and electrical systems involving low, medium, and high voltage. You use a variety of tools and technologies, including SAP maintenance software, PLC systems, AC/DC motors, and specialized test instruments. The position requires the use of company mobile equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and JLG machines. You may work at heights and in different areas of the plant, performing preventive and corrective maintenance.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.67 - $33.67/hr.
