Job Description

This senior-level role supports maintenance operations at a landfill facility by performing advanced diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on a fleet of heavy equipment, primarily Caterpillar units. The senior Heavy Equipment Technician also operates equipment as needed, oversees one technician helper, and uses computer-based maintenance systems to manage work orders, document repairs, and track parts and inventory. The position plays a key role in ensuring equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and a strong safety culture across the site.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on landfill heavy equipment, including dozers, compactors, loaders, haul trucks, and excavators.
• Conduct preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and company standards to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
• Service and repair hydraulic, electrical, powertrain, diesel, emissions, and computerized control systems with minimal supervision.
• Use diagnostic software, tools, and fault code interpretation to identify and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues.
• Safely operate landfill equipment as needed to support daily operations, move equipment, and perform functional testing after repairs.
• Follow all safety protocols, landfill regulations, and equipment operation policies while operating or servicing equipment.
• Use M5, TransMan, and similar computerized maintenance systems to open, track, and close work orders.
• Record repairs, inspections, maintenance activities, equipment status, labor hours, and parts usage accurately in digital systems.
• Manage and document inventory, including tracking parts usage and supporting parts ordering through maintenance software.
• Communicate equipment status, repair needs, and maintenance updates to site leadership and other stakeholders.
• Provide day-to-day guidance, direction, and hands-on support to an assigned technician helper.
• Assist with prioritizing workflow, assigning daily tasks, and ensuring timely completion of maintenance activities.
• Support the training and development of junior personnel by sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
• Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the maintenance team.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, both in the shop and in field service locations.
• Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and training sessions, and adhere to all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout.
• Respond promptly and professionally to equipment breakdowns, including field calls throughout the landfill.
• Assist with vendor communication, parts coordination, and overall shop organization to support efficient maintenance operations.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $68640.00 - $76960.00/yr.
