Network Specialist IV
Performs advanced work overseeing the development, implementation, maintenance, and management activities of local area and wide area networks (LAN and WAN) related to operation of the Health and Human Services (HHSC) networks. Involved in the design, installation, monitoring, and maintenance of network hardware and software for the HHSC network. Evaluates existing HHSC networks and proposes potential network enhancements. Maintains network hardware and software at the component level for HHSC LAN and WAN systems. Works under limited direction with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Work outside of regular hours may be required. Travel to other work location may be required.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Works with internal/external customers and/or agencies to provide support and installation services for WAN/LAN/WiFi/VOIP related hardware and software. Determine network focused operational, technical, and support requirements for multiple different sized remote locations. Assesses future requirements for equipment and capacity in support of long-range comprehensive LAN, WAN, and voice network systems. (25%)
Analyze existing network and system procedures for efficiency and effectiveness. Provide recommendations for WAN/LAN/WIFI hardware and software versions. Evaluate various network hardware and software resources to identify strengths, weaknesses, and potential benefits to HHSC. As part of the network analysis make recommendations for improved efficiency and optimization of the LAN/WAN/WiFi/VOIP networks. (20%)
Maintain performance monitoring and alerting using industry standard enterprise management tools. Alert management and other IT groups when sensitive issues arise, or a major problem is suspected. (20%)
Maintain critical IP-based network infrastructure services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Time Protocol (NTP), and Domain Name System (DNS). Support software and hardware tools for management of DHCP,DNS, and NTP. (15%)
Administer LAN/WAN/WiFi software and hardware while following industry best practices for security and configuration management methodologies. Communicates network related activities to technology and business areas for root cause analysis and agency change control. (15%)

Knowledge of networking hardware and software.
Knowledge of network security.
Ability to analyze problems, design solutions, and to perform detailed work accurately regarding network implementation/maintenance.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Industry related certifications are preferred, but not required: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), CompTIA Network+ and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in computer science, management information systems or a related field is generally preferred. Information technology experience may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis with a maximum substitution of four (4) years
