    Job Description

    Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems Sector is looking for a full time User Experience (UX) Engineer with experience delivering enterprise solutions. This position requires an active TS/SCI with Polygraph Clearance. The ideal candidate will be able to engage with mission end users to define and prioritize user requirements; translate user requirements to technical requirements; design wireframes, mockups and compositions of GUIs; conduct user research sessions with wireframes and prototypes; and work closely with software engineers and stakeholders in an Agile software development environment.

    Northrop Grumman is looking for an interaction designer to help solve challenging information visualization and navigation problems for complex systems. The UX Engineer is responsible for the visual and interaction design of complex user interfaces for a variety of applications and systems. Current projects draw heavily from the visual and interaction design of commercial applications and industry best practices. Designers will apply principles and best practices from the fields of interaction design, visual design, user experience and usability engineering to produce optimal designs. The UX Engineer must communicate design specifications clearly and accurately to customers and software engineers for implementation. The qualified applicant will become part of a Northrop Grumman functional organization that supports a wide range of domains.

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Participate in the UX research needed to understand the users and their goals
    • Translate user requirements into design decisions
    • Collaborate with team members through whiteboarding and brainstorming
    • Use Illustrator, Axure, Photoshop, or other design tools to create wireframes, visual designs and interactive prototypes
    • Participate in design critiques and take suggestions with grace
    • Communicate the value of user-centered design and design thinking to customers, users, program managers and executive leaders in large and small groups
    • Communicate design decisions based on user needs, customer needs and design principles
    • Validate designs against UX requirements
    • Apply existing style guides to new designs

    Qualifications :

    This position may be filled at either the Principal level or Sr. Principal level.

    Basic Qualifications for Principal Lead UX Engineer level:

    Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, a Master's Degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience, or a PhD with no experience required.

    • Active Top Secret with SCI and Polygraph clearance
    • Rapidly builds rapport and trust with customer organization through project-focused collaboration
    • Technical leader capable of leading large team(s) of dozens of engineers
    • Serves as organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs
    • Acts as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications
    • Experience developing user-centered design approaches for projects, pursuits, and research opportunities
    • Experience creating and communicating clearly via abstract diagrams and models of tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, product wireframes and prototypes
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct and lead user research and design exercises, such as field observations, user interviews and focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research, design studios, and card sorting

    Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 9 years of related experience, a Master's Degree and a minimum of 7 years of experience, or a PhD with a minimum of 4 years of experience required.

    • Technical leader capable of leading large team(s) of dozens of engineers
    • Serves as organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs

    • Experience creating and communicating clearly via abstract diagrams and models of tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, product wireframes and prototypes
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct and lead user research and design exercises, such as field observations, user interviews and focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research, design studios, and card sorting

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

    • Understanding of the User Experience Process
    • Demonstrable success communicating the value of user-centered design to customers, users, program managers and executive leaders in large and small groups
    • Experience with message shaping and storyboarding
    • Ability to work independently; is a self-starter
    • Experience creating documentation
    • Experience with visual and interaction design
    • Knowledge of user-centered design principles
    • Experience creating artifacts such as user flows, user stories, task models, and experience maps
    • A portfolio of previous work
    • Knowledge of software development processes such as Agile
    • Ability to conduct user research and design exercises, such as field observations, user interviews, focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research, contextual inquiry, design studios, and card sorting
