The Instrument Maker 2 works with clients (engineers, students, technicians, and faculty) in the design and manufacturing of equipment, apparatus and instruments, working from prints, sketches, diagrams, written and oral instructions. It is anticipated that you will also suggest design changes when alternate configurations appear appropriate. You must be able to work well in a team environment; interpersonal people skills are a must.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Use Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing Software in design and manufacturing work.
  • Programming, setting-up, and operating CNC Wire and Die Sinker EDM machines, CNC Vertical Machining Centers, and a CNC Hardinge lathe with live tooling.
  • Materials selection, forming limitations, joining and sealing methods, finish, and planning timely completion of work.
  • Making special jigs, fixtures, and devices for holding materials for machining.
  • Precision machining to close tolerances typically within .0005 inch on conventional lathes, milling machines, grinders, hone, etc.
  • Frequently working alone with only general supervision.
  • Hand fitting and bench assembly of pieces machined to close tolerance including use of precision optical viewing and measuring equipment.
  • Working with a variety of materials; several grades of aluminum, steel, brass, copper, heavy metals, (titanium, invar, inconel, tungsten, etc.), exotic materials, ceramics, plastics, honeycomb, and laminates. Perform heat-treating, tempering, and various curing methods.
  • Welding, TIG/MIG, arc and gas welding, soldering, brazing, and other bonding techniques. Repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining all shop equipment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Two years of experience as an Instrument Maker 1 OR equivalent education/experience.

    DESIRED:
    Journey standing as a toolmaker, model builder or Journeyman machinist; OR completion of apprenticeship training as a machinist and two years of related experience; OR four years of equivalent full-time experience. Precision manual machining to 0.0005in Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Two years of related CNC machine experience (CNC machining centers, CNC lathe, CNC wire EDM) TIG, MIG, ARC Welding, and silver brazing experience. Experience with Fanuc controls. CAD/CAM Solidworks experience.
