Northrop Grumman's Space Sector, Military & Civil Space Systems Division in Azusa CA, is seeking a qualified Functional Manager who can manage the Mission/Payload Design or the Mission Phenomenology functional sections within Systems Engineering to perform key assignments on across programs, including Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS), Defense Support Program (DSP), Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS),
Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), and other space programs. The SBIRS and DSP programs deliver timely, reliable and accurate missile warning and infrared surveillance information to key decision makers. The system enhances global missile launch detection capability, supports the nation's ballistic missile defense system, expands the country's technical intelligence gathering capacity and bolsters situational awareness for warfighters on the battlefield. The architecture includes a resilient mix of satellites in geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO), hosted payloads in HEO orbit, and ground hardware and software. The integrated system provides robust performance with global, persistent coverage. JPSS ATMS provides global environmental data used in numerical weather prediction models for forecasts, as well as provide space weather observations, search and rescue detection capabilities, and direct read-out and data collection products and services to customers; this information about our planet is vital to our ability to plan, predict, respond, and to protect lives and property like supporting climate research as well as operational weather and storm forecasting for civil, military, and international partners.
This role provides functional management for a team of up to 15 systems engineers and expertise in Payload Design is required.
A solid payload systems design technical knowledge and leadership in EO/IR space payload systems are required to help establish and execute effective work processes and procedures. Candidate needs to demonstrate a broad understanding of multiple payload design areas including Pointing Control Assembly, Optical Telescope Assembly, Focal Plane Assembly, Signal Processing Assembly, Thermal Control Subsystem, and Power and Signal Distribution Subsystem, including a broad understanding of payload life cycle including concept (R&D), design, development, I&T, Post Delivery Support, and Operational Support.
Overall technical understanding in payload operations and SBIRS Mission requirements are strongly recommended. Management activities include review of business needs, re-tasking of staff, identification of staffing needs, interviewing and hiring staff, performance planning and appraisals, and professional development of staff. The candidate will also be required to integrate input from internal department staffing, program leadership, and other departments, and participate in decision making on matters of a larger scope. Candidate must work effectively in a collaborative teaming environment, involving close coordination with program management, functional management, human resources, and various campus organizations. Candidate must also possess the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, demonstrate technical understanding of payload operations and the SBIRS Mission requirements are strongly recommended.

- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) & 5 years of leadership engineering experience in the payload design of EO/IR payload systems or phenomenology science development experience
- Basic understanding of multiple payload design areas, including subsystems
- Basic understanding of payload life cycle concept
- Active & Current DoD Secret Clearance
- Master's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
- 7 or more Years of leadership experience in Space and/or the Defense industry
- Knowledge of and experience with the SBIRS Program.
- Northrop Grumman Systems Engineering & Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) program process knowledge
- Broad understanding of multiple payload design areas, including subsystems
- Broad understanding of payload life cycle concept
- Familiarity with commonly used tools in both MS Windows & Unix environments.
- Active TS or SCI Clearance
