    BASIC FUNCTION:
    Collects blood samples as requested by physician orders. Organizes "Timed Requests". Keeps collection cart clean, neat and well-stocked. Keeps the phlebotomy area neat, clean and well-stocked. Assists technologists and technicians as requested. Assists in the central processing area and assists as needed.

    SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY: None

    NATURE AND SCOPE:
    Frequent interactions with laboratory manager and laboratory administrative director regarding laboratory operations. Participates with the laboratory supervisors on a variety of laboratory committees.

    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    Phlebotomy Level Responsibilities:
    • Drawing blood samples
    • Organize "Timed Requests"
    • Inventory and order supplies
    • Organize, clean and stock collection trays
    • Assist central processing as needed

    Phlebotomy Responsibilities:
    • Working as a team to maintain responsible attitudes
    • Ensuring optimal support of laboratory testing activities through timely and accurate specimen collection and processing of patient information and specimens
    • Processing customer requests (with the understanding that patients, visitors, all hospital staff, physicians and fellow co-workers are all our customers) and resolving customer issues in a friendly, courteous, professional and timely manner
    • Using all resources in the most efficient manner
    • Specimen processing and routing
    • Assist technologist with tube retrieval and add on tests

    CORE COMPETENCIES:
    Complies with policies/processes/procedures in the collection and processing of patient specimens and provision of patient services with < 2 errors per evaluation period.

    Assures valid patient results as evidenced by zero patient identification errors in the pre-analytical and post analytical phases of laboratory procedure per evaluation period.

    Understands and provides quality patient care by providing complete and accurate information on all collection materials as demonstrated by < 6 specimen errors per evaluation period. (Labeling error defined as: rejected specimens due to manual misspelling of patient name or rejected specimens due to missing required information.)

    Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all required specimens are collected and no omission errors or inadequate specimens result as demonstrated by less than two (2) unnecessary patient re-draws per evaluation period.

    Shows commitment to individual, departmental and organizational performance improvement.

    Applies the principles of AIDET when addressing patients about to experience a blood collection.

    Manages daily workload in a productive manner.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Phlebotomy Certification from an accredited national phlebotomy certification agency, or certification from an accredited phlebotomy program requiring a minimum of 120 hours of coursework, or five (5) years of phlebotomy experience including geriatric and pediatric collections.

    Basic computer skills.

    Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills.

    Willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines.

    Must be able to cover alternative shifts to cover department (for call-offs, sicknesses, emergencies, other situations) when requested by supervisor with at least four (4) hours' notice (sometimes less, depending on situation).

    Must be able to work weekends and holidays as scheduled.
