    BASIC FUNCTION:
    Provide direction and leadership for clinical staff in the sterile processing department. Participate in planning, analysis, and strategic direction of the department. Maintain quality and safety standards and reporting.

    SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
    Staff of sterile processing department.

    NATURE AND SCOPE:
    Oversees the performance of the staff in sterile processing department to ensure quality and safety are maintained in the department.

    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
    Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital.

    Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.

    In cooperation with the director of surgical services and nurse manager of the operating room, plans, coordinates and performs work in the sterile prep area and sterile prep decontamination area.

    Responsible for the decontamination area and preparation area by planning and coordinating all activities relating to the evaluation, procurement, storage, maintenance and distribution of supplies, equipment, instruments and processed supplies.

    Ensure that all processed supplies are available to the surgical nursing team and other areas of the hospital that use sterile prep reprocessing service so that they may provide optimum patient care.

    Is responsible for quality assurance monitoring and reporting.

    Responsible for orientation of new employees and ongoing education of staff members.

    CORE COMPETENCIES:
    Responsible for day to day availability of supplies, equipment, and instruments.

    Responsible for the timely flow of instruments through the decontamination process and back to the nursing units.

    Is responsible for monitoring sterilization assurance program and maintains sterilization records.

    Supervises all personnel who perform sterile prep tasks to insure sound practices of decontamination and reprocessing and follow AAMI standards.

    Supervises and receives, sorts, cleans, inspects, assembles packages and identifies instruments and trays used throughout the hospital and related areas.

    Is competent and thoroughly familiar with the use of Abacus2 and is super-user in order to train other staff.

    Initiates and ensures department cleaning schedule is adhered to.

    Participates in and guides and supports orientees and staff to appropriate learning experience.

    Participates in the surgical services management meetings.

    Maintains certification status and provides education programs to help staff maintain certification.

    Serves as a resource person to sterile prep staff in relation to education, equipment, supplies, quality assurance and special projects.

    Maintains on-going line of communication and interaction to the OR and all other areas of the hospital.

    Participates in the selection, evaluation and cost comparison of supplies and equipment.

    Demonstrates the ability and willingness to provide validation of needs and researches informational data as related to the budget process, both capital and operating.

    Provides staff with schedule according to departmental needs, schedule appropriate time off for staff. Provides appropriate staff on-call schedule and holiday schedule coverage.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Attends programs that are required by regulatory and/or accreditation agencies.

    CPR required.

    High School Diploma.

    Current certification in sterile processing.

    Five (5) years of experience in sterile processing.

    Demonstrated progressive managerial experience.
