The College of Built Environments has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Manager. The college is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to fill the role of Director of the Carbon Leadership Forum in order to execute the mission of this rapidly growing organization-to eliminate embodied carbon in buildings and infrastructure by inspiring innovation and spurring change through collective action.
Recognizing that buildings account for nearly half of global CO2 emissions, the Carbon Leadership Forum at the University of Washington, is dedicated to accelerating the transformation of the building sector to radically reduce the embodied carbon in building materials and construction through collective action. The Carbon Leadership Forum propels knowledge through its embodied carbon research and resources, collaboration through its robust network of architects, engineers, contractors, material suppliers, building owners, policymakers and associations, and action by supporting and empowering its members to advance new ideas and approaches through impactful initiatives.
The Carbon Leadership Forum is known as a critical source of robust, useful research data, a trusted keeper of knowledge on embodied carbon, a positive convener of stakeholders for impactful collaborations and effective incubator of industry led initiatives to empower rapid impact: The Director is responsible for inspiring, directing and ensuring execution of diverse programs in order to build upon and enhance this reputation.
As a skilled professional, the Director will forge relationships that enable the Carbon Leadership Forum to attain long-term stability and sustainability as a viable, effective, action-oriented and successful enterprise through the connection of research to industry resources and collective action.
This position will build and sustain the local, national and international collaborations and partnerships required to advance the mission and implement the broad programmatic goals of the Carbon Leadership Forum. They will direct and control this growing program and collaborate with students, staff, faculty, UW leadership and external advisors and partners in order to ensure that programs are developed to meet emerging industry needs and are aligned with global decarbonization targets. The Director will also be responsible for developing and executing strategies designed to create cost effective and on-going sources of revenue, community presence, and mission enhancement and sustain the activities of the Carbon Leadership Forum.
The Director will need to apply independent judgement and decision-making skills in order to provide professional level administration and management. Additionally, given the growing ambitions of this small organization, they need to have the ability to creatively and strategically align ambitions with available resources, the dexterity to execute projects of a non-routine nature and the willingness to step in and do lower level tasks such as data entry or event support as needed to meet project objectives and time frames.
Successful execution requires expertise in program management, the development of specialized knowledge of the program, and the interpersonal and collaborative skills needed to foster a positive organizational culture and effective external partnerships. This position is contingent on project funding availability with at least 1 year of funding confirmed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP: At all times
PROGRAM EXECUTION: Execute and/or delegate tasks as needed to enact the programs and projects of the Carbon Leadership Forum as outlined in the annual strategic plan including activities such as:Research: Collaborate with the CLF research team to identify, fund and execute research and consulting opportunities. Primary research responsibility is to ensure that activities support the broader mission of the organization, that there are sufficient fiscal support and staff resources to execute the projects as proposed/executed and that research results are broadly disseminated.Educational Resource Development: Build mechanisms to obtain industry input to inform and enable the development of low embodied carbon practice resources for the building sector. Execute and/or delegate the activities such as:?Monthly newsletter and partner/subject matter news updates.Monthly webinars created by professional volunteers.Creation of sector specific toolkits, model presentations, and educational content.Coordination of volunteer contributors.Dissemination of CLF resources to the broader professional community.
•Network: Grow the CLF's network of individual members, online community, regional hubs, subject matter focus groups and sponsors through strategic engagement and empowerment of volunteers. This includes executing and/or delegating activities such as:Overseeing a growing group of volunteers to implement network activities.Ensuring that the online communication platform is managed and maintained.Developing and growing the engagement and impact of the NGO Roundtable.Identifying opportunities that create and/or support events that advance the mission of the CLF and build a community of engaged members.
•Initiatives: Organize advisory board members, external stakeholders, and staff to develop and implement strategies to incubate (evaluate, support and/or endorse) industry led initiatives.
•Sponsors: develop and implement strategies to recognize and engage sponsors and increase sponsor numbers.
ADVANCEMENT/FUNDRAISING and COMMUNICATIONSProvides leadership in CLF's development, advancement and communication efforts.Work with UW and CBE Advancement Offices and CBE's Director of Research to develop an actionable plan for fundraising, grant identification and applications.Work with CBE's Advancement Office to refine and implement sponsorship programs.Development and execution of communication plan in collaboration with UW CBE Communications including website and social media engagement.Spokesperson for the Carbon Leadership Forum to professional audiences, the University and media presenting at national conferences and webinars, and represent the CLF's expertise in building sector decarbonization within internal and external committees related to sustainability.
ADMINISTRATIONWork closely with the CLF manager, advisory board and committees to inform, assess, and address issues such as defining the organizational plan, establishing external partnerships and prioritizing strategic objectives that affect the organization.Ensure the effective allocation of resources, and establish the policies, methods, procedures, and work rules for the program to ensure the program conforms to institutional and department polices and regulations.Actively engage with, develop and sustain the Advisory Board to ensure diverse perspectives are brought to this rotating board.Convene board, staff, sponsor and volunteer working groups as needed to execute mission. Organize, host and lead multiple virtual meetings each month.Oversee the daily operations of the organization including managing scheduling, budget management, executing project deliverables, and providing executive direction of all program strategy, compliance and efficiency measures.Build a dynamic culture of collaboration and co-creation to define problems and derive solutions.Supervise CLF staff and evaluate and adjust professional staffing as necessary to achieve the CLF's objectives, while developing effective pathways for professional development.Execute or delegate key administrative tasks such as:?Set organizational policies with input from UW CBE, Department of Architecture, and CLF Advisory Board to ensure they comply with all federal, state, and local legislation.Ensure policy decisions are recorded and communicated.Develop and manage annual budget in collaboration with CLF Advisory Board and CBE fiscal management team.Maintain and grow a database of contacts and active participants.

Bachelor's Degree in business, policy, architecture, engineering, or related field.
4-5 years experience required:
•Senior management experience, ideally with some exposure or experience in an academic or nonprofit environment.
