    SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing complex respiratory services throughout the health care center including, but not limited to procedures utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease and/or illness, ventilator management, blood gas collection and analysis, airway management, treatment protocols, etc. The RRT works collaboratively with the CRTT and acts as a resource for them. They also work collaboratively with different disciplines throughout the health care center to deliver high quality respiratory services. Cares for all age groups - birth and above

    EDUCATION:

    Required

    Graduate from a 2 or 4 year AMA-approved Respiratory Care program

    Registered Respiratory Therapist through the National Board for Respiratory Care

    Licensed RCP in the state of Ohio

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge and skill required to perform the job responsibilities for both technical and dimensional content.

    Has in-depth knowledge of specialized technical or administrative field, or a broad working knowledge of a professional field

    Analyzes and interprets complicated information.

    Determines a course of action based on general guidelines.

    May modify existing forms, procedures, or methods.

    May use highly sophisticated equipment requiring extensive training.

    PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    1. Performs various Therapeutic and Diagnostic procedures on in and out patients

    Conducts Physician prescribed treatments ex. aerosol, IPPB, SMI, CO2, USN

    Performs Chest Physical Therapy ex. Percussion, Postural Drainage, and Vibration

    Administers prescribed medical gases

    Initiates, maintains, and monitors mechanical ventilators

    Intubates & maintains a patent airway ex. suctioning, bag-mask ventilation, etc.

    Weans patients from ventilatory support in accordance with Mechanical Ventilation Weaning Protocol

    Performs Arterial Blood Gas puncture

    Collects blood samples from arterial lines for blood gas analysis

    Performs whole blood analysis for Blood Gas determination. Provides routine quality control of ABG

    analyzer and basic troubleshooting as necessary

    Responds to all emergency situations/codes immediately and assures the adequate maintenance of ventilation during CPR

    Responds to high risk deliveries

    Set ups and monitors Pneumogram and Multi Pneumogram studies

    Assists with Bronchoscopies and Swallow Studies

    Participates in the development of clinical pathways

    Attends ITC's and offers complete and concise information about the patient's Respiratory status

    Performs Pulmonary FunctionStudies

    Assists with Cardio-Pulmonary Stress tests, Cold-Air Challenges, And Desaturation Studies

    Responsible for implementing the education and exercise program for Pulmonary patients in Rehab

    Runs and operates the Diagnostic Sleep Lab

    2. Quality of work

    Reviews a patient's chart for appropriate order and assesses the patient's status, reassess when necessary.

    Records pertinent information on the patient's chart and documents on the education notes. Provides

    patient and family with information and does follow-ups

    Demonstrates a complete understanding of all policies and procedures

    Performs computer order/entry functions as required

    Properly takes down discontinued equipment and follows proper cleaning protocol andreassembles

    equipment after clean

    Assesses maintenance needs, initiates maintenance requisitions to repair equipment, furniture etc.

    Inventories department and determines supply need. Conveys needs to appropriate personnel

    JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES - Other:

    1. Recognizes the role of an RRT in and outside of the department. Acts as a resource person for the staff of other departments.

    2. Participates in the orientation and education of new employees and students.

    3. Attends required staff meetings and in-services

    4. Maintains minimum competencies

    5. Assists with answering the phones, scheduling appointments, making copies, faxing, and filing.

    6. Maintains the department in a clean, organized, and safe place to work

    7. Sits on various committees, works on projects, policies, and procedures.

    8. Performs other duties as assigned.
