The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.
The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California and Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Division of Genomic Medicine, are seeking an outstanding candidate with research excellence in bioinformatics and genomics and clinical experience in genomic testing for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor of Clinical level. The successful candidate will have primarily clinical service and research (clinical and translational) responsibilities, serving as the Assistant Director of Bioinformatics in the Center for Personalized Medicine (CPM) at CHLA. They will join the CPM clinical and scientific team, and will help to lead the development, deployment, implementation and maintenance of genomic pipelines, databases and software tools for analyzing genomic data in support of clinical testing needs for both constitutional disorders and pediatric cancer. CPM has established genomic pipelines for clinical exome sequencing and large panels such as OncoKids, and an infrastructure built with a combination of open-source academic packages and commercial software. They are deployed both on an on-premise High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC) and in the cloud in Amazon Web Services (AWS). The successful candidate will play a key role in developing new informatics solutions to support both increasing test volumes and introduction of new genomics-based tests including whole-genome sequencing and liquid biopsy based tests.
The successful candidate will hold an MD, MD/PhD or PhD or degree with training and demonstrated accomplishment in Bioinformatics and Computer Science, Biological Sciences, Genetics, or Genomics. The successful candidate must have in-depth knowledge of genomics-based genetic testing (e.g. whole exome sequencing, chromosomal microarray, and panel-based testing) and be familiar with cutting-edge informatics methodologies and computational technologies applied to further our understanding of the genetic etiologies of human diseases including cancer. Experience in developing and/or applying algorithms and software tools for whole-genome, whole-exome, panel sequencing, genotyping, or RNA-Seq data for either clinical or research purposes is essential. Computational expertise is desired in the following areas: designing and developing web- and cloud-based bioinformatics next generation sequencing data analysis solutions, programming skills (Java, R, Perl, Python, etc.), knowledge of database technologies (SQL Server, Oracle, mongoDB), and big data analytics. The successful candidate will be a member of multi-disciplinary clinical and research teams working in both clinical and cancer genomics. Academic appointment through USC Keck School of Medicine is available at a level appropriate to training and experience. CHLA and USC are equal opportunity, affirmative action employers. The division greatly values diversity and is committed to building a vibrant and culturally diverse community of faculty that best reflects the patients and families that we serve. Individuals from underrepresented groups in medicine are especially encouraged to apply.
Children's Hospital Los Angeles has been named the best children's hospital in California and among the best in the nation for clinical excellence with its selection to the prestigious US News & World Report Honor Roll. Children's Hospital is home to The Saban Research Institute, one of the largest and most productive pediatric research facilities in the United States. The hospital is also one of America's premier teaching hospitals through its affiliation since 1932 with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
