Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team supporting the NASA Balloon Operations Contract. This position will be located in Palestine, Texas at the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF).
The engineer will join our staff who support the NASA Balloon Program. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center / Wallops Flight Facility manages the agency's scientific balloon flight program. The balloons carry scientific instruments to altitudes from 30,000 to 120,000+ feet. The program supports 10 to 15 flights each year from launch sites worldwide. Northrop Grumman, which operates NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, provides mission planning, engineering services and field operations for NASA's scientific balloon program. The CSBF staff have launched more than 1,700 scientific balloons in the over 35 years of operation.
This Mechanical Engineer will work as part of a cross-functional team, in the design, analysis, integration and test of our balloon gondola payloads. The engineer will also support activities to ensure that mechanical ground support equipment and launch equipment are built, maintained and operational for support of successful balloon launches. Projects include upgrades of all mechanical integrated gondola structures, balloon inflation support equipment, and our balloon/gondola launch vehicles. The engineer will support multiple projects spanning the balloon gondola mission lifecycle, from early requirements definition, to design, test and launch. The engineer may be expected to travel to the launch locations which include: international locations such as Antarctica, Australia, Sweden, New Zealand; and US locations in New Mexico, and Texas.
•BS in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field with 2 years of engineering design experience
•Proficiency with 3-D CAD modeling software, Solidworks
•Responsible for verifying completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning and coordinate with Northrop Grumman engineering.
•Responsible for oversight and coordination of hardware component designs/drawings including both electrical and structural components that require interface control drawings being provided to the contractor including identifying design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommend revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
Responsible for coordination with other organizations affected by the design and/or development including, but not limited to Manufacturing Engineering, Operations and all Engineering Disciplines.
