    Vehicle Driver I

    Vehicle Driver I - Food Service Vehicle Driver performs routine motor vehicle operations. Work involves operating motor vehicles in transporting passengers or cargo. Prepares and maintains forms or records pertaining to vehicle operation. Works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Employee may work rotating shifts in the event of a disaster and/or operational necessity. The employee may be required to drive a State vehicle, if in possession of a valid driver's license and completion of/or enrollment in a defensive driving and van driving course. Assists with cook duties and serves in dining areas, as needed.

    Essential Job Functions:
    Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
    Operates motor vehicles such as automobiles, vans and trucks.
    Performs operator maintenance before, during, and after trips, such as checking and/or servicing fluid levels, tires, lug nuts, and lights.
    Ensures vehicle passenger and cargo capacity is not exceeded, passengers use safety restraints, and cargo is distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.
    Secures and protects cargo.
    Transports passengers on scheduled or on-call basis.
    Transports cargo consisting of, but not limited to, supplies, and food items.
    Performs related work as assigned.
    Cleans vehicles inside and outside when time permits.
    Demonstrates commitment to the Performance Improvement efforts of Food Service, Lubbock State Supported Living Center and HHSC.

    Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

    Knowledge Skills Abilities:
    Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, of passenger and cargo loading and unloading methods, of traffic rules and regulations, and of the maintenance of motor vehicles.

    Skill: Operate all Food Service vehicles, to include backing and parking of large trucks with trailers.

    Ability: Ability to read, speak and understand written and spoken English; compute basic mathematical calculations; follow schedules and instructions in operating vehicles, and follow practices in loading and unloading cargo.

    Registration or Licensure Requirements:
    Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

    Requires a current TB Skin Test or x-ray given or coordinated by Lubbock State Supported Living Center.

    Completion of/or enrollment in a Defensive Driving and Van Driving Course is required.

    Initial Selection Criteria:
    Valid Texas Driver License. High school diploma or GED. Prior driving experience and excellent driving record, preferred.

    Additional Information:
    The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the minimum of the salary range.

    Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

    All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing.

    Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

    All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.
