    Job Description

    POSITION TITLE: Deli Clerk

    ACCOUNTABLE TO: Deli Manager

    PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

    To provide quality deli products that meet the customer's needs and ensure a positive shopping experience for customers.

    NATURE AND SCOPE

    Emphasis in this position is in meeting daily needs of preparing, stocking and displaying product in order to ensure maximum department sales, product availability and provide high level of customer service. The position requires on-going customer interaction, providing prompt, courteous and accurate service. Primary learning challenge is in product knowledge, case sets, tray assembly and equipment use. This position requires knowledge of food safety regulations, ongoing moderate to heavy lifting, walking, standing, operation of all Deli equipment, exposure to hot surfaces and oils, social skills, judgment/decision making, reading, writing, and math. Position functions and work hours may vary according to business needs. Assignments and work direction provided by Deli Manager or person in charge.

    ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

    1. Assist customers

    Greet customers as they approach the deli counter

    Processes customer's orders properly (quantity, quality and price)

    Answer customer questions; provides product sampling and suggestive selling

    Answer deli telephone calls promptly

    Perform price checks

    Exchange product when necessary

    Bring customers to location of item, when needed

    Assists with special orders

    Performs cashier functions as needed

    Functional Requirements

    Frequent: Physical - lifting up to 50 lbs., equipment operation (scanner, register, scale, check approval machine, coupon machine, intercom), reaching, standing, turning;

    Mental - judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, memorization, reading, writing, math

    Occasional: Physical - lifting over 50 lbs., equipment operation (adding machine),

    calculator, squatting, stooping/bending, walking

    2. Prepares and deli product

    Follows safe food handling and preparation processes

    Properly shaves and slices meats and cheeses

    Ensures freshness and quality of all product

    Ensures proper assembly and recipes for salads, sandwiches, pizza, party trays and chicken, etc.

    Accurately labels and prices all wrapped product

    3. Fills and rotates deli cases and displays

    Pulls stales and writes down product, quantity and retail

    Prepares sales area by cleaning cases and bins

    Ensures cases and displays are full, clean and attractive

    Maintains proper refrigeration and handles product properly to avoid damage

    Code dates product and separates outdated or unfit product

    Sets cases and displays according to instruction

    Frequent: Physical - lifting/carrying 5 to 50 lbs., pushing/pulling 500 to 1500 lbs., walking on uneven ground, turning, standing, walking, reaching, stooping/bending, equipment operation (pallet jack, highboy cart, tongs)

    4. Assists with department merchandising as directed

    Builds and maintains department displays

    Decorates the department

    Assists with seasonal resets

    Checks price and verifies sign and product price

    Frequent: Physical - lifting up to 50 lbs., carrying up to 50 lbs. to occasional, pushing/pulling to 100 force pounds, equipment operation (deli rack), walking, reaching

    Mental- judgment/decision making, reading, memorization

    Occasional: Physical- pushing/pulling up to 200 lbs., equipment operation (shopping cart, cleaning utensils), stooping/bending,

    5. Assists in receiving of product

    - Correctly matches delivery to invoice and signs

    - Monitors product quality

    - Stores product and ensures proper refrigeration

    Frequent: Physical - lifting/carrying 5 to 50 lbs., pushing/pulling 100 to 2000 lbs., reaching, turning, walking, squatting, stooping/bending, equipment operation (highboy cart, box cutter, pallet jack)

    Mental - judgment/decision making, math, reading, writing, memorization

    6. Breaks down department and performs cleaning duties

    Follows all safety, sanitation and food handling regulation

    Breaks down of department; cleans ovens and fryer; washes/changes salad bowls

    Cleans department and maintains conditions in the back room

    Performs department shop back functions

    Cleans shelves and cases as needed

    Sweeps and mops floors

    Uses personal protective devices (cut resistant gloves, chemical resistant gloves, chemical splash goggles, poly gloves) as instructed

    Frequent: Physical - lifting/carrying 5 to 50 lbs., standing, reaching, turning, walking, squatting, stooping/bending, equipment operation (cleaning utensils)
