    Pharmacy Intern

    GENERAL SUMMARY:

    Provides optimum level of supportive pharmaceutical services to patients and other health care providers within the guidelines of applicable local, state, and federal laws, and regulations. Provides all levels of assistance to the pharmacist to assure the delivery of the correct medication, strength, and dosage form to the correct patient at the correct time. Provides assistance in any appropriate manner to assure the highest level of health care to patients. Understands and effectively reacts to the unique needs of patients of varying ages, i.e., neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Supports the Mission and Core Values of the Sisters of Mercy. Respects and maintains confidentiality.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    Required Education - High school graduate, science background preferred. Enrolled in a college of pharmacy and maintaining reasonable progress toward degree. Registered as an intern with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.

    Required Experience - None

    Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of pharmaceutical and biological terminology, hospital background, computer training helpful. Ability to effectively communicate with customers of varying ages educational background.

    Physical Demands - Prolonged, extensive standing/walking.

    Key Job Duties, Responsibilities and Projects

    Fills patient medication orders with the appropriate number of doses for each drug preparation. Credits patient for unused medication as appropriate. Fills one time and other orders for drugs. All work is verified by the pharmacist. Orders unit dose drugs, extemporaneously purchases drugs and storeroom supplies and maintains inventory. **

    Performs Intravenous admixtures while adhering to established sterile techniques.**

    Processes the wholesaler order. Verifies and checks on shorted items and reorders when required. **

    Restocks AcudoseRx machine as assigned. Charges departments for medication when required. Provides check of anesthesia narcotic boxes when needed. **

    Performs all Unit dose/bar coding functions through WASP.

    Restocks crash cart medications. Charges for medications uses, reseals carts, and records plastic lock numbers. **

    Files all patient medication profiles, IV Profiles, and copies of physician order forms subject of new admissions, discharges, and transfers.

    Removes and sends orders/items via the FAX machine or pneumatic tube. Delivers medications, narcotics, or other items when needed. **

    Advises pharmacist of scheduled dose return and other discrepancies related to drug utilization. **

    Maintains Pharmacy in a clean and orderly fashion. This includes removal of outdated medications and daily housekeeping duties. **

    Processes employee prescriptions through QS1. Intern is able to process prescription through complete record entry and review to final check of dispensed product. All processes reviewed by pharmacist. **

    Maintains confidentiality of patient and personnel information as per hospital policy.

    Maintains acceptable absenteeism/tardiness record per hospital policy.
