    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Peer counselors provide basic breastfeeding information and support to mothers for the Department of Health in Pasco County WIC Program; they are available after hours (until 9 p.m.). Counselors cannot distribute/clean/inventory breast pumps or give medical advice. Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to mothers through telephone contacts, group and individual support and classes. Maintains and updates client files and provides follow-up service on all referrals received with proper documentation. Assist the clinic staff with monthly breast pump and supply inventories as well as the overdue breast pump calls to clients. Assist and support the agency's breastfeeding initiatives and projects. Must complete the 20 hour training from the Loving Support Program for Peer Counselors. Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor, regular in-service trainings and participates in appropriate WIC Program and Health Department meetings and attends conferences and workshops as assigned. Provides materials to individuals and/or families about WIC Services and Breastfeeding classes. Completes forms and paperwork in hard copy and electronically as required. Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients. Assists in the maintenance of tracking systems of WIC participants and breastfeeding data. Records and reports accurate data on all client contacts to Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, Including Utilization of Equipment required for the position:

    •Knowledge of basic arithmetic and able to perform arithmetical calculations.
    • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
    • Ability to maintain records, organize and coordinate work assignments, communicate, maintain
    effective working relations and good rapport.
    • Ability to review data for accuracy and completeness.
    • Ability to follow instructions
