    Description

    Job Description:
Leidos is a Fortune 500 company aimed at embracing and solving some of the world's most pressing challenges. Through science and technology, Leidos makes the world safer, healthier and more efficient.

Our Civil Group offers an array of exciting career opportunities for the best IT, energy, logistics and engineering professionals.

Leidos is seeking a Civil Engineering Researcher in Pittsburgh, PA at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) on the Carbon Capture & Simulation Initiative (CCSI) and Onshore Programs.

    CCSI -

The Carbon Capture and Simulation Initiative (CCSI) Toolset will be used to combine and optimize a virtual cement plant (VCP) model, a model for a carbon capture system combined with the cement plant, and a virtual cement and concrete testing laboratory (VCCTL) model. The VCP model will be used to analyze the impact of processing parameters on the cost, energy footprint, and GHG emissions associated with cement manufacturing. The carbon capture system on the cement plant will be modeled and optimized using the CCSI Toolset to minimize the cost of carbon capture for a targeted GHG reduction level. The VCCTL model will be used to predict the final mechanical and performance properties of the cement based on changes in the feedstock composition and manufacturing process. All three models will be coupled and optimized, simultaneously, to provide a comprehensive model of cement manufacturing, its costs, and the associated environmental footprint.

    Onshore -

The goal of this project is to minimize drilling risks in the onshore environment by better defining the conditions that could affect the UOG wellbore integrity. From this task, improved methods for predicting and preventing gas migration within the wellbore cement during cement hydration and subsequent strength development will be developed; it is expected that a new measurement technique will be developed and if proven successful in predicting gas migration potential, a device may be developed for market use. This project will also have a direct impact on drilling safety through revision of industry recommended practices.
    • Develop a cement model to study the flow of fully developed flow and the unsteady flow of cement slurries.
    • Perform numerical simulations for flow of cement slurries in various geometries and flow conditions.
    • Characterize the effects of shear-rate dependent viscosity, particle concentration, temperature, and pressure, on the viscous stress and the yield stress tensors of the cement slurry, by using non-linear constitutive relations for the stress tensor where the particle transport flux equation is also incorporated.
    • Optimization of virtual cement and concrete testing.
    • Cement scientist with expertise and experience using the virtual cement plant (VCP) model and the virtual cement and concrete testing laboratory (VCCTL) model to analyze the cement manufacturing process and to predict the final mechanical properties of cement.
The Civil Engineering Researcher will conduct; analytical, experimental, investigative and other fact-finding work using standard scientific approaches and techniques to support principal scientific researchers, observes, calculates, records and interprets the results of tests and analyses, and designs, constructs, modifies, calibrates, operates and maintains equipment used for these purposes or devised as a result of the work.

    Additional Responsibilities Include:
    • Prepare technical reports on project scope, milestones and conference/workshop presentations to disseminate research findings, activities, operations, and future initiatives to industry, academic and government stakeholders is a requirement for this position.
    • Period status reporting (weekly/monthly/quarterly/annually) is required to update project managers and customers.
    • Participate in group meetings. Group meetings are designed to allow the applicant to discuss current research and promote discussion with fellow researchers. The manager will request the applicant to provide a PowerPoint presentation for group meetings. The frequency of these presentations is generally once every 6 months but can occur at a higher rate.
    Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in a science or science-related field (e.g., biology, chemistry, economics, geology, mathematics, physics) and 5 years of job-related experience, or a Master's Degree and 3 years of job-related experience.
    • This position will require extensive interface with customers and potential collaborative partners, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The complexity of information to be managed will require excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
    • Possess computational and modeling skills with an emphasis on cement slurry behavior and wellbore integrity.
    • Extensive knowledge of the rheological behavior of cement slurries.
    • The candidate will have demonstrated the ability to author publications and to present results related to their research work.
    • Knowledge in computational fluid dynamics analysis for three-dimensional unsteady flows of cement slurry using packages such as ANSYS_FLUENT or OPENFOAM.
    • Experience in rheological behavior of cement slurry related to gas migration during early hydration.
    • Excellent communication skills and a willingness and interest to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team environment to drive towards overall project and team objectives is also required.
    • Demonstrated experience in mentorship of early-career scientists and/or students is required.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • A PhD in Civil Engineering with at least 1-2 years of experience in fluid dynamics of cement slurry.
    • Familiarity with working in a Research and Development setting.
    • Experience conducting research at a GOGO (Government owned Government operated) lab.
