    Job Description

    GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

    Research Technician I is a full-time position that serves to assist Principal Investigators in a research laboratory. Primary responsibilities are to assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. This position requires a person who has Bachelor of Science degree in molecular/cell biology or a related field, pays attention to details, is capable of working independently after training, possesses good verbal and written communication skills, and works well as part of a team.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Principal duties are to assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory. Specifically, the lab is part of the MGH Cancer Center and the focus is on cancer metastasis. The primary role of this position is to process blood samples from the clinic using the lab's cutting edge technology to capture circulating tumor cells. The process includes following protocols, troubleshooting, and detailed record keeping.

    SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
    • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Internet searches
    • Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

    Qualifications :

    EDUCATION:
    • Bachelors degree in biology, engineering, or related scientific field
    EXPERIENCE:
    • 0-1 years research and laboratory experience are required, which could be gained as part of undergraduate education/training.
    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    • Duties will be performed in a research laboratory
      Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek, but actual schedule can be flexible
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
    • None
    FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
    • Ordering equipment and supplies within assigned budget
