Purpose: To oversee the selection, pricing, promotion, and stocking of produce to meet department objectives for sales, margin, turns, labor and customer service. To ensure a clean, growing, and well maintained produce department with exceptional quality.
I. CUSTOMER SERVICE
A. Greet customers, smiling and making eye contact. Assist customers with questions, in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to others when necessary.
B. Assist other departments as appropriate to ensure the highest possible store operations and customer service.
C. Handle unplanned situations calmly, smoothly and in alignment with pre-established policies.
D. Model exceptional customer service skills and communicate expectations to staff.
E. Provide staff with the tools required to ensure the highest level of service possible to our shoppers.
F. Provide product information and educational materials to customers and staff.
A. Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality and delivery.
B. Work with local growers to plan requirements for upcoming season.
C. Obtain and file certification papers on local producers.
D. Research new or alternative sources of supply.
E. Review invoices for accuracy, price changes, and product additions.
F. Get credits from suppliers when applicable.
G. Coordinate periodic price surveys of identified competitors.
H. Price product to achieve margin and sales goals while maintaining a competitive image.
I. Ensure current prices are in POS and flipcharts are kept up to date.
A. Set sales, margin and inventory turn goals for departments. Review weekly, monthly and quarterly reports and plan corrective action as needed.
B. Meet with General Manager, Merchandising Manager and Marketing Manager quarterly to develop promotional plans.
C. Participate in planning changes in store layout for merchandising and ease of shopping.
D. Develop and implement approved short and long range department goals.
A. Plan and build produce displays. Ensure seasonal changes and feeling of abundance.
B. Work with Marketing Manager to ensure quality demo program.
C. Ensure appropriate signage at all times.
V. DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE
A. Maintain and enforce safe working conditions.
B. Ensure that department is clean, orderly and meets health department standards.
C. Maintain department equipment in working order. Advise Store Manager of equipment problems or needs.
D. Maintain current department forms (for training, ordering, scheduling, etc.) as needed.
E. Plan and maintain attractive displays and proper signage.
F. Conduct periodic thorough cleaning of displays and equipment.
G. Coordinate quarterly inventory.
-Retail produce experience, including buying
-Knowledge of organic and commercial growing practices, and organic certification regulations
-Supervisory experience-hiring, training, evaluating and directing
-Good communication and listening skills
-Ability to work well with others in a cooperative environment
-Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment
-Familiarity with natural and organic products
-Ability to lift 50lbs repeatedly during shift
-Ability to work in a cold and damp environment
-Regular predictable attendance
-Ability to develop and implement budgets and to adhere to cost and margin requirements
-Ability to plan, develop and implement efficient and productive systems
