    Job Description

    Responsible for collecting all pre-operative health history, known allergies, labs, tests and any other data needed for patients presenting for surgery under the direct supervision of the Anesthesia department, RN and providers. Performs nursing duties and provides direct patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Provider who is responsible for the care, comfort, safety and well-being of assigned patients. Documents care provided appropriately in the patient chart according to policy and procedure.

    Reports to: Director of Surgical Services

    Assists the RN in the assessment of the patients' needs in conjunction with the individualized plan of care for each patient.

    Follow established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

    Performs plan of care interventions, including specimen collection and wound care. Administer medication accurately in compliance with hospital policy and procedure. Documents patient care given.

    Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.

    Monitors, documents, and communicates patient's status and reactions to interventions with RN, physician, patient, and families.

    Provides care that reflects the patient care plan and evaluates the patient's progress toward attainment of outcomes.

    Assists in patient/patient representative teaching (re: knowledge deficit of treatment plan for current health problems) as directed.

    Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.

    Monitors voicemail messages on arrival and throughout the day.

    Verifies surgery schedule book for next day; compare and correct information on "List of Patients".

    Confirms time of arrival for surgical patients with OR manager or charge nurse.

    Records arrival time and any testing needs in computerized scheduling system prior to schedule date.

    Assures the chart is complete 48 hours prior to scheduled surgery date for Anesthesia to review.

    Provides lab reports, EKG reports, and x-ray reports to the anesthesia department for review and coordinates additional work-ups.

    Reviews consent form (if signed in Surgeon office).

    Conducts or coordinates pre-operative calls (phone screening and teaching) to inpatients and outpatients for up to one week from surgery (documenting all attempts to call patient).

    Coordinates pre-op visit(s) with anesthesia and necessary therapy if applicable.

    Maintains list(s) of patients by scheduled surgery date.

    Reviews and confirms all History & Physicals are available and complete on chart.

    Maintains confidentiality and recognizes patients' rights.

    Communicates effectively with physician's office to gather necessary patient data.

    Serves as additional staff in other areas of the surgical department and UP Health System Bell as necessary.

    Demonstrates understanding of importance of Standard precautions and isolation techniques.

    Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique while performing procedures.

    Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs regarding pediatric patient (0-12 years of age).

    Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs regarding adolescent and/or adult patient (13 years and older).

    Demonstrates understanding of patient care needs of the geriatric patient.

    Completes all training and education to maintain clinical competence on assigned unit according to competency list for specific skills.

    Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in continuing education; attends scheduled and mandatory meetings, in-services, staff meetings and completes required annual education.

    Demonstrates awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for personal professional growth.

    Abides by the Code of Conduct.

    Supports the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

    Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

    Qualifications :

    Minimum Education Graduate of a Program in Discipline X Required

    Required Skills Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment, multitasking and take appropriate action.

    Certifications: X Basic Life Support (BLS)

    Licenses: Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Michigan.

    Minimum Work Experience 3 Years experience working in a surgical environment required. Prior experience prepping patients for procedures pre-operatively and post-operatively required.
