About the role

Symetra Investment Management Company’s (“SIM”) Counsel role is part of a dedicated commercial mortgage lending and investment legal and compliance team. This role assumes primary responsibility for transactional and legal compliance support, including derivatives, private placements, fund formation, commercial mortgage loan closings and other investment functions. This position will also support the CCO and compliance team in state and federal regulatory compliance matters, including with respect to the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, Securities Exchange Act of 1933, Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act and/or EMIR.

 

Who we are

Symetra Investment Management (“SIM”) is a registered investment adviser.  Currently, SIM supports affiliates in regard to investment advisory services (generally fixed income, hedging and third party manager oversight) and commercial mortgage lending.  SIM plans to expand its offerings to include third party clients as well as issue its own securities.

 

What you will do

  • Responsible for interaction with internal clients and external parties on various legal, compliance and operations issues, including those of a complex nature. 

  • Responsible for managing projects and supporting others on various legal issues, including those of a complex nature
  • Will be required to perform following: draft and review variety of contracts (including real estate notes, mortgages, guaranties, SNDAs, ISDA Master Agreements, Note Purchase Agreements, and Non-Disclosure Agreements); assist in analyzing new product ideas or complex corporate projects; provide business advice from a legal perspective; research and provide timely advice on applicable legal issues; participate in management and other meetings; direct paralegals; assist senior attorneys on a variety of legal matters affecting SIM; work well in cross-functional teams; and be accountable for advice and meeting deadlines.

Who you are

  • Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • 3-7 years of in-house or industry legal experience, including experience with sophisticated financial institution clients
  • Bar admission to CT 
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Ability to handle multiple projects effectively
  • Willingness to learn (or continue to learn) real estate finance and investment law. Excellent analytical and communication skills. Ability to work within a team.
