The Senior Research Engineer - Metallurgy will be responsible for autonomous management and execution of R&D assignments and provide guidance to junior level Engineers and Chemists. The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in material science or metallurgical or mechanical engineering and have at least 5 years practical technical experience in the heat treatment of metallurgical alloys.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Support and participate in longer term research and development activities focused on the advancement of product technology and knowledge gain in the areas related to the physical, mechanical and materials aspects of relevant industrial processes (both within heat treatment and in other application areas, including but not limited to metal forging, forming, and rolling). Act as an expert technical resource in metallurgy fro Quaker Houghton regionally and potentially globally.
Collaborate with heat treatment formulation chemists to match performance properties of Quaker Houghton products with application requirements and provide guidance to assist in development of novel, value-added products.
Address complex customer problems by independently developing and improving product technology used in a variety of manufacturing and mechanical systems in order to enhance processes, safety and quality in order to meet customer needs and provide solutions to application problems. Take pricing, timing and priority-setting into consideration.
Design, develop, and implement specified tests and determinations, in order to answer research questions and address problems of customers.
Provide technical service and knowledge to customers and sales associates based upon the engineers current level of expertise. Visit customers when required to assist the Commercial team, develop and deliver presentations and engage in discussions on complex matters of significance with customers.
Comply with the applicable regulations and standards regarding quality, safety, environmental as well as the occupational health standards in order to minimize risks in these areas and to create opportunities and chances for improvement.
Execute physical and mechanical testing to support the assessment of new and alternative raw materials in order to enhance performance and minimize cost. Report data to support the final decision making process regarding implementation of alternative raw materials in existing products.
Partner with manufacturing in order to improve the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing process. Assist manufacturing and the quality assurance lab in solving quality and production problems.
Education, Experience, Skills & Knowledge:
M.S. or Ph.D. in material science or metallurgical or mechanical engineering required.
Minimum 5 years practical technical experience in the heat treatment of metallurgical alloys.
