Boston, MA 02298
Full-time, Part-time
Location: Boston, MA

Job Description

We are seeking a computational scientist to the join Data & Computational Sciences (DCS) at the Boston, MA site of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This individual is expected to lead the image analysis capability of DCS, supporting the analysis (including registration, segmentation, object quantification and visualization) of histopathology, cellular and materials imaging studies. The individual should have experience in applying machine learning methods to different stages of the image analysis pipeline and be able to advise scientists on best practices. In addition, to supporting specific imaging projects, the individual is expected to be the product owner of the DCS image analysis platform that will support rapid development of custom analysis methods, as well as allow bench scientists to manage their own image analysis needs.  As product owner the individual is expected to set the vision and work closely with the DCS software development lead and colleagues in Data, Technology and Engineering to develop a scalable, production platform for image analysis. Finally, the individual is also expected to support downstream analyses of quantified images, possibly integrating it with other data sources such as from genomics or small molecule studies. Thus, the ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in image analysis, but also a broad skillset to address data science problems in the life sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead image analysis within DCS by being the product owner for the image analysis platform, prioritizing image analysis method development & project work, and mentoring other DCS scientists working on image analysis
  • Work closely with the DCS software development lead & colleagues in Data, Technology & Engineering to implement a scalable platform for image analysis to support both DCS scientists developing custom analysis methods as well as bench scientists using methods developed by DCS
  • Collaborate with project teams across the company, at all sites, to ensure that images are appropriately acquired to enable effective analysis, and that the image analysis itself is done in an accurate and timely fashion to enable the project to move forward
  • Apply statistical and machine learning methods to data derived from images, to support downstream analyses including, but not limited to, biomarker identification, phenotypic profiling and integration with other data types such as genomic or toxicological endpoints.

Desired Skills:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field with 5+ years of industry experience
  • A strong background in machine vision, image processing, with expertise in machine learning as applied to image analysis
  • Expertise in the analysis of histopathology images and high content screening experiments
  • Expertise in the use image analysis toolkits (e.g., scikit-image, Fiji, OpenCV) and tools (e.g., CellProfiler, Ilastik)
  • Excellent programming skills, ideally in Python, C/C++ or R.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with large-scale image data formats (e.g., image pyramids, Zarr, HDF5)
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras)
  • Experience in computational chemistry or computational biology
