Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated computational chemist to join our Computational Drug Design group in Boston. This individual must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and have demonstrated the ability to guide scientists in drug discovery. This individual will be responsible for contributing to both lead identification and optimization programs using methods encompassing all computational aspects of drug discovery. In addition to molecular modeling, this individual will work collaboratively with the global Data and Computational Sciences group at Vertex to provide expertise in data analysis, cheminformatics, and methods development.


  • Perform computational experiments and data analyses that accelerate the discovery of high-quality drug candidates, in close collaboration with chemists, biologists and other project scientists
  • Leverage physics-based and machine learning approaches to design new chemical entities
  • Work with other computational chemists and cheminformaticians to assess and develop new computational methodologies, create workflows and share successful methods
  • Seek out opportunities to improve Vertex's global R&D capabilities through collaboration with DMPK, materials characterization, safety assessment, and other groups
  • Develop and deploy relevant software tools to drug discovery teams


  • A Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Computational Chemistry or related discipline and 3+yrs post-doctoral studies or experience in drug discovery is preferred.
  • Experience in applying molecular modeling methods to structure, ligand and fragment-based drug discovery projects
  • Expert knowledge of the state-of-the-art in computational chemistry and its application in drug discovery
  • Experience with commercial and/or open-source molecular modeling and data mining software
  • Expertise with a wide array of computational methods preferably including structure and ligand-based virtual screening, programming, statistics, data analysis, QSAR derivation and application, and ADME modeling
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
