Senior Underwriting Manger

 

Responsible for managing the underwriting operations of Construction – Home Office.  Builds expertise by selecting, developing and managing a unit of technically competent underwriters with multi-line expertise, confidence of judgment and deal orientation. Identifies and pursues opportunities for profitable growth in order to achieve a balanced, profitable and quality book while protecting Company assets. Develops and maintains effective business relationships with brokers, agents, clients, distribution and service partners. Applies an advanced level of expertise and judgment to analyze data prepared by underwriters and provides approval for risk selection and acceptance, coverage, and price for multi-line business.

 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Leadership: Responsible for the acquisition, retention and development of senior level underwriting talent. Formally manages, guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills.  Fosters an environment conducive to continuous improvement and effective cross-functional partnership.  Continuously balances UW workload and territory.
  • Risk Selection: Responsible for developing and implementing a strategy to evaluate risk quality and advance UWs’ skillset aimed to qualify, select and assess annual practice policies and multi-year project specific wrap-ups.  Most risks handled by Home Office Construction are large and sophisticated and involve multiple layers of analysis to evaluate the full spectrum of risk (insurance, jurisdictional, credit) and risk transfer (deductible structures, captives, coverage).  
  • Internal cross-communication: Proactively communicates with Claims, Referral, RQA, Loss Control, Product, Service, Credit to develop/enhance standard work, evaluate account/portfolio exposures & controls, and develop new products.  
  • Agent/Broker/Client Relationships: Establishes and maintains high level of relationship management with key Agents and Brokers.  Listens to the markets’ needs, is aware of the construction & insurance trends at any point in time and responds accordingly.  Develops underwriters’ negotiation, communication and general deal making skills.  Works with the Team and Distribution to manage the pipeline of opportunities for Home Office Construction.  Travels extensively across the US to visit Brokers, Clients and Prospects.
  • Portfolio Management:  Evaluates portfolio performance based on profitability metrics, multiline diversification, production metrics and industry trends. Defines strategy and oversees execution of continuously improving portfolio in alignment with segment objectives
  • Quality Audit and Account Review:   Through periodic audits ensures that files meet regulatory requirements and internal documentation standards. Coaches underwriters to articulate thought process, decision making within both account reviews and file documentation.

Qualifications:

 

  • Expert level understanding of commercial property & casualty products; insurance operations; finance and actuarial concepts; regulatory environment; reinsurance/captives; account management; underwriting; and producer management.
  • Skills required include analyzing and problem solving; adaptability; decision making, building relationships.
  • Need to work effectively with others; communicating effectively; negotiation; influencing others; applying financial acumen.
  • Need to focus on service; executing well; planning and organizing work; and achieving results.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent training required, CPCU/CRIS designation (or equivalent), experience managing or mentoring underwriting staff preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
