Aquaculture Lab Manager, Animal Nutrition Research

Job Description and Requirements:
This position is responsible for managing a research wet lab with recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for the ADM Animal Nutrition Science and Technology team. The goal of the facility will be new product development for the aquaculture industry through executing research trials that support the aquaculture team pipeline. The person in this position will work primarily in the aquaculture wet lab at the Animal Nutrition Technology Center, but may also assist in pilot-scale feed manufacturing and lab analysis (e.g., water quality) at the facility. Trials will focus on creating value from ADM ingredients and technology. The position will also require flexible schedules to allow working weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
This position requires strong managerial skills to operate the facility which include: ensuring compliance with rules and regulations, coordinating trials, managing and developing personnel, implementing animal use guidelines, ordering equipment and supplies, and acquiring fish or shrimp for trials. The position will also assist with the development of SOPs and models for trials. In addition to the manager responsibilities, the individual will need a working knowledge of complete life cycle rearing of target species (tilapia, shrimp, and salmon), RAS operation and maintenance, disease management, water quality management, and research methodologies. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills while functioning on a diverse team. The person will support projects in ADM Animal Nutrition Science and Technology Aquaculture Team pipeline.
Detailed Responsibilities:
  • Manage operation of wet lab
    • Ensure compliance with rules and regulations (e.g., water discharge and disposal of animals)
    • Coordinate trials and timelines with the Aquaculture S&T team
    • Implement and follow Animal Care and Use Committee guidelines
    • Manage personnel, equipment, and supplies for the wet lab
    • Schedule team members (e.g., illness, weekends, and holidays)
    • Develop SOPs and create models for trials (e.g., stress challenge)
    • Acquire fish and shrimp for trials
  • Complete life cycle rearing of target species (e.g., tilapia, shrimp, & salmon)
  • Set up, maintain, and modify RAS
  • Maintain optimal water quality conditions
  • Collect trial data and assist in completion of trial reports

    Required Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. in relevant area (e.g. aquaculture, aquaculture nutrition, fish physiology) and minimum 2-year experience managing a RAS facility
    • Other candidates may be considered based upon relevant knowledge and experience
  • History managing direct reports
  • Experience developing SOPs and designing studies
  • Extensive working knowledge of RAS and animal husbandry
  • General plumbing and small engine knowledge
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data management
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication
  • Ability to communicate to diverse audiences including technical and non-technical stakeholders
