We seek an accountant with a strong record in keeping accurate general ledger books with scrupulous attention to all financial details, who will find their involvement in the financial management of a university press an exciting and intellectually stimulating position. The Press is located in the Marriott Library, at the heart of the U of U campus, and publishes up to thirty new titles annually in such varied disciplines as archaeology and anthropology, American Indian studies, Mormon studies, folklore, western history, environmental studies, natural history, nature writing, creative nonfiction, poetry, and linguistics. The work is challenging, requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, demands close attention to detail and a flair for organization and scheduling, and is rewarding for those who are curious about the world of print and electronic publishing. This position works collegially with all members of the Press staff and is essential to long-term financial planning. The successful applicant will also join the larger community of the Association of University Presses (AUPresses) business and finance professionals, with the opportunity to attend the annual financial officers meeting.

Responsible for all financial matters of the university press, working in close association with the press director. This includes working with sales and royalties reports from the Chicago Distribution Center ( CDC ); sales tax reports; commission payments to sales reps; "releasing" new titles when they arrive at CDC from the printer, including calculating unit cost; creating sales reports after conferences and paying sales tax (includes applying for sales tax permits prior to conferences); creating balance sheets, income statements, annual budget, and travel budget; maintaining insurance certificate for CDC ; creating and maintaining title budgets and P&L statements for individual books.
An equally essential function is accurate reporting to the university (many reports are done on a monthly basis), including journal entries for sales, cost of sales, etc. This position also reconciles all purchase card activity, creates annual purchase orders and maintains sufficient funds for paying vendors, freelancer independent contractors, etc.; completes fiscal-year-end closing reports; handles all departmental deposits.
Annually (a few are semiannual), puts together all royalties statements as reported by CDC sales or from permission or rights-sales income. Includes balancing royalties, obtaining W-9s or W-8BENs from authors, doing check requests for royalty payments, and sending royalty statements to authors. Requires scrupulous attention to detail.
Other tasks include completing AUPresses financial reports; copyright permissions; booking departmental travel and submiting reimbursement paperwork; monitoring excess inventory and scheduling quarterly meetings; maintaining write-down schedules for all publications; sending out comp lists for each book upon publication; maintaining paperwork for PCI requirements; participating in annual purchase card audit; keeping up to date on all university-required training as required for specific duties.
Other duties as necessary.
Attendance at the annual AUPresses Financial Officers Meeting is encouraged.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency, plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.
Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.
Applicants must have a strong background in cost accounting and keeping an accurate general ledger. Those with a knowledge of publishing and, especially, familiarity working with the Chicago Distribution Center, will be given preference in application review.
