The Senior Director of New Product Development (SDNPD), Dana-Farber Solutions is responsible for oversight of Dana-Farber's clinical solution/product development. This individual will be part of the Business Initiatives and Alliances department, reporting to the Vice President of Business Initiatives and Alliances, under the direction of Dana-Farber's Chief Finance and Business Strategy Officer. Responsibilities will include evaluation, prioritization, business/commercial planning, product design and development, partnerships, product management and ongoing enhancements. Currently, New Product Development includes operational and budgetary oversight of the Dana-Farber Pathways program and one other product in early stages of development. There are several other new products in consideration for future development. Products will focus on areas of existing Dana-Farber clinical or operational expertise where opportunity exists for expanded patient impact, clinical decision support, standardization and commercial return.

Dana-Farber is a highly collaborative and matrixed organization, with significant clinical, research and technical expertise and world-leading experts in their respective fields. This individual will work closely with the executive team and clinical/technical experts across Dana-Farber as well as external technology and/or commercial partners.  In collaboration with the Chief Clinical Development Officer, the Medical Director of Pathways and DFCI leadership, the SDNPD will determine the strategic priorities of the products and related DFCI initiatives. Key internal partners and advocates include Dana-Farber's Chief Clinical Development Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Innovation Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chief Health Information Officer, Chief Quality Officer Senior Director of Architecture and Strategy, physician leaders of Population Sciences and other clinical leaders.

Along with a team of staff, the SDNPD will represent DFCI locally, nationally and internationally in matters of clinical product innovation, clinical pathways and electronic clinical decision support as needed with professional and commercial organizations such as ASCO, CMS, Clinical Pathways Congress, NQF, COC, ADCC and others.

  1. Strategic and Operational Oversight of Dana-Farber Pathways (established program)
  • Collaborates with DFCI leadership, the Pathways Medical Director and Director of Pathways Operations (reports directly to SDNPD) to establish strategic priorities/annual goals for the program and determine programmatic initiatives and direction. Day-to-day oversight and operational management of the Pathways program is the responsibility of Director of Pathways Operations.
  • Evaluates programmatic success, identify innovations and best practices, and seek continuous improvement
  • Assists in identifying and designing future pay-for-performance initiatives related to the Pathways program
  • Accountable for planning, budget development, and ongoing use of Dana-Farber Pathways across the DFCI enterprise as well as commercial product deployment
  • Collaborates with colleagues such as Brigham and Women's Hospital, Mass General Brigham, Philips Healthcare, and Royal Philips
  • Collaborates as needed with Innovation and OGC for contracting and agreements related to Pathways
  • The scope of the Pathways work includes all DFCI ambulatory and inpatient sites of care and includes medical and radiation oncology
  1. New Product Development
  • In close collaboration with and in support of Dana-Farber's clinical and administrative leadership, identify and prioritize new products, services and solutions based on Dana-Farber's expertise, the needs of clinicians and patients, and the potential for external impact and Dana-Farber return
  • Carefully analyzes and address risks associated with regulatory, cost, brand, execution or other factors
  • In partnership with the relevant clinical/subject matter leadership, guides product vision, development and enhancements across multiple product suites
  • Identifies and partners internally and externally with relevant product development partner
  • Provides oversight and guidance over each phase of the product life-cycle
  • Develops, executes on and manages robust business plans and commercial strategies, including commercial partnerships; may include innovative and risk-based commercial strategies; Develop and manage associated financial models, forecasts and budgets
  • Proposes enhancements to current services/products and the integration of new product ideas across multiple product suites, leveraging critical thinking, problem solving and health care expertise
  • Engages external stakeholder input and partners in the design of prioritized services and products; assists in translating needs into user stories for highly complex or multiple products
  • Translates business and competitive intelligence research back to products and identifies gaps in product portfolio
  • Allocates work to appropriate team members, engaging other relevant business units; holds members accountable for follow up; maintains relationships with stakeholders and keeps them up to date on project status
  • Develops and defines project infrastructure (work plans, timelines, resources, milestones, KPI's etc.); anticipates, identifies, manages and resolves risks to project status, milestones, timeline or the product development roadmap; develops and presents updates / metric reports to leadership
  • Develops meeting materials (e.g., agendas, presentations, etc.) and other written materials (e.g., business plans, etc.) for senior leadership
  • Collaborate as needed with Innovation and OGC for contracting
  • Articulates recommendations or options to leadership to support a definitive decision making
  1. External collaborations
      • Leads interactions with public and private organizations and agencies which are relevant to clinical pathways programs, clinical decision support and other new product areas
      • Identifies, develops and manages relationships with external technical/product and commercial partners
      • Monitors relevant external trends, announcements, innovations and policies, analyzing potential institutional and programmatic impact.
      • Represents Dana-Farber at external venues, committees and conferences
  1. Supervisory Responsibilities
      • Manages teams related to Pathways Operations/Knowledge Management, New Product Planning, dotted oversight of Analytics/Informatics roles and an active network of external partners
      • Hires, mentors and advises, assigns and evaluates work, reviews performance formally at least annually, recommends promotion and salary adjustments and takes corrective action
      • Allocates managers' time appropriately between projects and navigates effectively with stakeholders when priorities need to be shifted
      • Enables managers to refine skills in communicating effectively, influencing stakeholders, executing work and driving momentum, analyzing information, problem solving, networking and collaboration
      • Establishes project management best practices
      • Mentors capability development related to project management, product development, commercial/business planning, business development and partnership/stakeholder management
      • Guides others on specific strategies to identify stakeholder needs and expectations and address them effectively


  • Minimum 10 years of experience in healthcare product development
  • Experience within healthcare sector required, including within or in collaboration with academic medical centers and academic faculty members; Experience in an oncology setting preferred
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA, master's or clinical degree (MD, RN, NP, PA, PharmD) strongly preferred; technical degree (data science, SWE) or equivalent strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and success in leadership roles including budget operations and 5+ years managing and leading a team
  • Ability to travel (domestic and international) as needed, estimated 5-10%

  • Independently plans and facilitates large meetings and workgroups with faculty and senior management across multiple departments
  • Assures compliance with DFCI policies, procedures, regulatory agency requirements and ensures safe, efficient and effective delivery of quality care, in collaboration with department leaders
