The maintenance apprenticeship program is set up to train candidates to become successful maintenance mechanics. This program consists of classroom training and on the job (OTJ) training. Selected candidates will be required to enroll at Washburn Institute of Technology (WIT) and complete the Advanced Systems Technology program. The classes will be conducted either at 8:10am - 11am or 11:55am - 3pm. The candidate must pass all classes and maintain a B average. The second part of the training is OTJ training. When not in class, the candidate will return to the plant and work with mechanics and technical resources to learn skills to become a successful mechanic. Tasks may include rebuilding parts, conducting PMs, working on projects, learning the operation of lines, and other duties as assigned. Schedules may be modified with advance notice to meet class needs or to provide other training activities.

Qualification / skills
- Applicable technical certifications and/or degrees
- 1-3 years of experience in a mechanical or electrical skilled trade
- Positive attitude that can initiate self-driven activities
- Must have strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Must have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Must be eager to learn and take on additional responsibilities
- Must be flexible to change days off and work off shifts when required

Eligibility
- There will be a series of interviews conducted.
- Must pass the KEYS test at WIT in order to meet the enrollment requirements.
- A grade B or greater is required for Math and Physics prerequisite classes at WIT
before starting.
- All tuition and books will be paid by the company upon enrollment. College credit hours are given for each class that is passed. The apprentice mechanics will be paid for their time at school. The candidate must maintain a B average each semester. The candidate may be subject to reimbursing the company all expenses associated with training if the candidate cannot maintain a B average each semester or fails a class.
- After successfully completing all courses the mechanic will transition into the C (entry level) mechanic role and be required to graduate into the B mechanic role within two years. If any candidate fails to successfully complete the coursework or skill demonstration tests they will be given the opportunity to bid to a different role. The candidates will be required to work for Frito-Lay for a minimum of 3 years after they become a "B" mechanic or reimburse the company for all school expenses for their training.
