The Utah Smart Energy laboratory (U-Smart) has an immediate opening for an Embedded Software Research Engineer to support the embedded software development on multiple research projects.

This position is considered Category IIA : Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah's response to COVID -19. Following general guidelines and accepted technical approaches performs tasks in the design, development, and implementation of software engineering applications, the analysis and investigation of software engineering project tasks, the definition of design specifications and parameters, development and application of standard routines and utility programs, resolution of hardware/software compatibility and interface design considerations and analysis of system architecture requirements and structure.
Assignments are defined in terms of general objectives and are of diverse scope and moderate technical complexity. May assign work to lower level technical support employees. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Requires a bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

The ideal candidate would be skilled and possess working experience in all/many of the following:
•Front-end and back-end programming, RESTful API, Java, C/C++
oDeveloping and maintaining traceable methods/libraries and their documentation
•Knowledge of Blockchain technology and building custom platforms
•Knowledge of programming under Linux and embedded Linux distributions such as Debian distribution
•Knowledge of programming and interfacing with I/O pins of microcontrollers and single board computers
•Understanding of computer networking fundamentals
oExperience setting up and troubleshooting network switches (including SDN switches), routers, and wireless mesh networks
•Experience working with databases such as SQL, mongo, or others
•Experience programming and system integration with middleware such as DDS, OPC UA, Kafka
•Knowledge of power systems communication protocols such as DNP3.0, IEC 61850, Modbus
