As an Advanced Optical Materials researcher in PPG's Optical Monomers and Coatings (OMC) business, you will support Research and Development (R&D) activities and innovation of breakthrough OMC products through materials science, polymer engineering and optoelectronic device integration. This position will drive new product development through hands-on laboratory experimentation that enables commercialization of ground-breaking optical materials, often by working directly with customers. This role will have a primary focus on materials and fabrication development to enable augmented reality functionality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop technical solutions to improve AR/VR device performance and meet market needs; integrate electrical and optical components to add new lens functionality.
  • Solve technical problems in the area of advanced optical materials through the application of appropriate scientific, experimental, and statistical methods.
  • Drive a concept into a prototype, and envision how a prototype could transition into a consumer product that aligns with customer specifications.
  • Apply fundamental chemistry and materials knowledge and conduct laboratory work to accelerate product development and introduction to customers, including formulation and testing of new optical materials.
  • Support product optimization, process development, and qualification testing for prospective customers.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a relevant technical field, such as Physics, Materials Science or Polymer Science.
  • 3 or more years with technology conceptualization and/or customer-facing product development, ideally in the areas of optics, optoelectronics, smart devices, and/or device integration; preference will be given to experience in conductive polymers, polymer mechanics, and electronics integration.
  • Compelling combinations of less education and significantly more industry experience will be considered.
  • Expert-level knowledge in at least one of the following areas: electrochromic materials, optoelectronic device fabrication, 3D printing, augmented reality, virtual reality.
  • Proven ability to lead innovative and independent research projects.
  • Experience documenting and communicating research findings and/or performance testing results via detailed technical reports and publications.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-functional team in a sophisticated, constantly evolving, fast paced environment.
  • Successful track record of applying statistical tools for DOE and data analysis.
