Our Resilience, Security and Risk practice has consistently been at the forefront of the field since it was formed in the mid-1990s. The practice brings together threat and risk specialists, physical and electronic security engineers, strategic operational security specialists, business continuity practitioners and blast engineers in a unique multi-disciplinary environment, helping our clients manage malicious risk, natural hazards and operational reliability in each aspect of their businesses and operations. Our Protective Intelligence team analyses the nature and scale of terrorism, civil unrest, crime and other malicious risks in urban environments worldwide. Actionable intelligence on threats has a vital role to play in informing the design of buildings, transport infrastructure, bridges and stadia. We work closely with our teams in Blast Resilience and Security Engineering in North America, Australasia, Europe and the Middle East. Our intelligence enables businesses that underwrite, construct and operate cities to become more resilient in an evolving threat environment. ABOUT THE ROLE We're looking for a Graduate Protective Intelligence Consultant to join our growing team of bright professionals in our San Francisco office. From your first day, you'll join an unrivalled community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification. You'll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you'll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we'll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills. Your role will be to collect and analyze open source intelligence on malicious risks. You will structure and analyse relevant intelligence data utilizing various references and tools, with an emphasis in assessing and presenting data using digital-based platforms. You will deliver written and verbal analysis to our clients, and work with them in order to define their security requirements in accordance with their own risk appetite and other business objectives. You will support business development and marketing activities and work closely with our Blast Resilience and Security Engineering teams. You will be expected to contribute to research and report writing, develop risk assessment methodologies, and help develop new marketing material in collaboration with others. You will provide support to internal clients where relevant. You may also represent Arup at relevant conferences and other external events. You will demonstrate a high level of intellectual curiosity and interest in crime, terrorism, civil unrest, politics or international relations. You will enjoy solving complex problems. You will be comfortable making judgments about malicious risks based on imperfect information. You will enjoy working with people from a range of professional disciplines. You will be collaborative in your approach but able to work independently. At times, you will need to manage competing PRIORITIES and your workload to meet deadlines. WHAT WE LOOK FOR We're looking for graduates with intellectual curiosity, personal drive and technical knowhow. If you can combine these skills with an understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the protective intelligence sector and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED - A Bachelor's degree in a relevant academic discipline, e.g. politics, sociology, criminology, international relations etc. - Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Ability to conduct sound research and develop defensible research methodologies - Demonstrable proficiency in working with data and data manipulation tools - Strong interest and curiosity in open source intelligence analysis and/or political and security trends in a country or region. - An understanding or desire to know more about the built environment. - Be excited by working directly with clients to understand their business, define security requirements accordingly and identify opportunities to broaden the work that Arup does with them. - Ability to be creative to solve complex problems. - Be self-motivated, willing to learn and network extensively. - Demonstrate experience in using Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel. - Candidate must not require sponsorship, now or in the future to be considered for this role PREFERRED - A Master's degree in a relevant academic discipline. - Awareness or experience with using digital tools to process, analyze, organize and present data - Evidence of good commercial awareness (e.g. this could have been gained through an internship or part-time work in business, industry or other commercial organization). - Fluency in a second language - On occasion, flexibility to work with colleagues in global time zones - Client-facing experience - Quantitative analysis skills - Familiarity with the intelligence cycle - Experience with utilizing open source intelligence (OSINT) tools to collect and analyze data NOTABLE PROJECTS For over seven decades Arup has been at the forefront of the most ambitious and innovative design and engineering.
