Responsibilities

Milieu Manager (MHS)

 

A member of the nursing staff, under the direct supervision of the Unit Manager.  Provides supervision and staff education to MHS personnel, runs Code BERTs and Code 22s, first responder to Codes to be primary contact to provide verbal de-escalation and reduce restraints, provide verbal de-escalation training, provide alternative group or individual tracks.  Provides direct patient care and maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu so that the hospital can fulfill its primary mission of providing quality health care within the community.  Assists with development and implementation of unit based initiatives.  Addresses unit cleanliness, completes environment of care rounds, responsive to Manager and unit needs, supports patients and patient care, and ensures     Directs, engages, teaches and breeds success for MHS staff.  Ensures patient belongings for unit appropriately stored and documentation thorough regarding patient care and belongings.  Ensures patients attend group and work with all MHS to get all patients into groups.  Works to ensure the unit is performing at its highest level in all arenas and works with Manager to ensure same.  Ensure all MHS staff arrive on time, are given appropriate breaks and are in compliance with timetracker in collaboration with Manager.

Fuller Hospital is a 102-bed licensed, private psychiatric facility located in South Attleboro, Massachusetts providing inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services to residents of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Inpatient units are designed to treat adults with general psychiatric or intellectual disabilities, as well as adolescents with general psychiatric issues. Patients with co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse disorders can be treated on most units. Fuller Hospital also provides a less intensive Partial Hospital Program (PHP) to patients with psychiatric and co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse disorders.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent.  Baccalaureate degree in psychology or related field of human behavior or equivalent is preferred.

 

Experience:

Two years experience in inpatient psychiatry. 

 

Technical Skills:

Ability to communicate clearly through spoken words and in writing.

 

Age and Disability:

Must possess knowledge and skills necessary to interact compassionately and appropriately with families of the mentally ill.

 

Other:

The milieu manager must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s/area’s/department’s policies and procedures.  Should have ability to lead and train staff regarding restraint reduction and verbal de-escalation skills.

 

Contacts:

Reports to the Program Manager.  Interacts with patient, patient’s families and all internal departments.

 

 

Environmental Demands:

Labile pace.  Much time spent walking and engaging patients.  May work in noisy and congested areas; may escort patients off grounds; may be exposed to violent patients and bodily fluids.

 

Essential Physical/

Mental Demands:

Physical effort necessary to lift patients, assist with

ADL’s and respond to psychiatric crisis situations.  Ability to prioritize workload during changes in pace.  Able to complete Handle With Care and CPR in total at hire.

 

Manual Dexterity

Required:

Ability to write legibly in patient charts.
