Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, ED Clinicians will assess and provide behavioral health referrals in the Milford Emergency Department including inpatient, outpatient, addiction or step down referrals for patients and families. ED Clinician dispositions are based on bio-psycho-social assessments as well as utilizing communication skills to seek information as necessary from providers, community mental health organizations and families to best serve our patients and which will enable the ED Clinician to identify problems related to the total well-being of the patient. The ED Clinician is a liaison between medical staff, community resources and the patient and their family. The Clinician will be responsible for working with Emergency Department staff to create, educate and implement behavioral health referrals, treatment modules and evaluations for ED patients presenting with substance abuse and behavioral health concerns. The Clinician should have knowledge of community mental health care resources, addictions treatment, SBIRT knowledge and the ability to work with state agencies such as DMH and DCF to ensure favorable patient disposition. Ability to work efficiently, have great patient interaction skills, in depth clinical interviewing practices and a sense of urgency are a must.

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field. Must possess LCSW or LICSW valid in the state of Massachusetts. LICSW is preferred.
  • Experience: Two (2) years experience working in an Outpatient Program and/or completing psychosocial assessments. Knowledge of community mental health care resources, addictions treatment, and the ability to work with stage agencies.
  • Technical Skills: Must be proficient with written and verbal communication skills. Must have knowledge of community-based and state agencies with regard to behavioral health services.
  • Age and Disability: Must possess knowledge and skills necessary to interact compassionately and appropriately with patients and their families on a regular basis.
  • Other: Professional demeanor and appearance, as well as the ability to deal tactfully with sensitive situations and maintain patient confidentiality. Must be able to interact effectively with other hospital departments to achieve desired outcome for the patient.
  • Contacts: Reports to the NP or MD. Contacts outside care providers as needed.
  • Environmental Demands: Physical surroundings are pleasant and comfortable, with minimal exposure to injury or other hazards.
  • Essential Physical/Mental Demands: Minimal physical effort required. Handling light materials and supplies.
  • Manual Dexterity Required: Ability to write legibly on both internal and external documents.
