Howmet Aerospace, Cleveland Operations, has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer. We are a heavy industrial manufacturing plant which employs approximately 800 people and produces over 60 million pounds of aluminum, titanium, magnesium nickel alloy, and steel forgings. The site produces unique, engineered products in a wide range of configurations, sizes, and tempers for aerospace, military, and commercial vehicle applications.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF JOB

Under the direction of the Plant Operations Manager this position is responsible for assuring the prescribed and developed processes are being followed during general operations, as well as overseeing the process management activities at the shop floor level to minimize executional scrap and reprocessing. They provide support to the supervisors and work closely with the process engineers to stabilize processes and ensure proper recipe controls are in place. The Manufacturing Engineer employees training, HBS (Howmet Business System) methodology, and Six Sigma to minimize process variation and assure discrepant product is not passed on to further operations. This position does not directly supervise other personnel; however, does have oversight of the process management initiatives in their area. The incumbent communicates continually with all levels of personnel across all departments at Cleveland Operations.

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the Process Management activities at the shop floor level to minimize executional scrap and rework

  • Assure developed work instructions are adhered with minimal variation through six sigma methodologies and HBS

  • Develop and implement training programs for operational personnel to assure manufacturing operations
  • Evaluate and implement tools to improve and stabilize operations performance
  • Perform rate studies and initiate engineering change orders to properly align standards or improve plant profitability
  • Coordinating and conducting development programs to facilitate continuous improvement initiatives
  • Communicate through daily management systems current issues and tracking of resolutions
  • Acting as project manager for multifunctional teams on process improvement activities
  • Assessing instability in forging processes through analysis of non-conforming material data
  • Troubleshooting issues through validation of critical process variables and recipe management
  • Supporting operations to improve quality process reliability and improvement

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position involves minimal to moderate exposure to risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is normally performed in a shared work environment divided between the shop floor and an interior work space. While not exposed to hazardous materials, this position requires wearing full PPE to protect from mobile equipment and hot materials when on the shop floor.

This position requires anywhere from light to moderate physical activity, such as walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time, as well as some lifting and engaging all motions necessary to efficiency perform product and equipment inspections.

This position also requires a willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule including working the occasional weekend and be responsive after normal working hours for support.

QUALIFICATIONS BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • BS Engineering Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of Manufacturing/Engineering work experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mechanical / Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering degree

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/EQUIPMENT USED

  • Ability to stand/walk for several hours each day;
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 25lbs on occasion;
  • This is not a temperature-controlled work environment;
  • May be required to wear PPE including eye and hearing protection, metatarsal safety boots.
