Overview

The Business Intelligence Analyst will be situated in the Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA) department and is responsible for delivering on multiple common tasks with minimal supervision during a Business Intelligence project on time and of high quality. These tasks would include business consulting, understanding clinical processes and policies, development of technical data design, analysis and building visualizations to promote a data driven health system

The Business Intelligence Analyst is a quantitative analytics professional who specializes in delivering actionable insights and analytics to business users, leveraging an enterprise analytics framework, infrastructure, and operating model. This position will be working closely with the Nursing Quality department. Nursing Quality at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute supports nurses at all levels in planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating programs that influence and enhance evidence-based practice. The COBA BI Analyst will work closely with resources from Nursing Quality on specific initiatives related to patient safety, patient care and developing metrics for regulatory requirements.

The candidate applying for this position will have an interest in working in a healthcare environment and supporting frontline nursing initiatives to improve care for patients at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Initially by focusing on foundational projects and descriptive analytics.

Responsibilities

  • The Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA) team at DFCI conducts analyses used to provide actionable information to the different operational and clinical departments across the institute
  • Using this data, the team supports reporting and analyses in areas such as operations, quality measurement, trend management, utilization, patient management and outcomes
  • The COBA Analyst supports regulatory and American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet reporting requirements and data driven projects that require strong collaboration with nurse leaders and Institute partners
  • The work contributes to building sustainable infrastructures, processes, and systems that increase the transparency, integrity, and availability of clinical nursing quality data
  • The COBA Analyst must develop an in-depth understanding of our data and data structures as well as the ability to translate specifications into programming logic, and create visualizations and reports
  • The analyst will be expected to support new projects, function independently within a fast-paced environment, work on several different projects/tasks concurrently and serve as a data advisor to COBA team and project teams as new projects or ad hoc reports are collaboratively being developed
  • Assignments will include complex data analysis projects that can be multi-disciplinary or interdepartmental
  • The analyst will also collaborate with the Data Management team to address data requirements for analytic reporting
  • The analyst will work with a variety of tools (ex: SAS, SQL, Excel, Oracle, Tableau etc) to access data, write queries, develop programming logic, run reports, manipulate, and analyze large datasets to meet the needs of institute
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of clinical nursing quality data
  • Work with internal clients to develop and translate business requirements into project charters, business and technical requirements, wireframe models, and ultimately produce effective and insightful interactive analytics, in collaboration with other COBA team members
  • Utilize business intelligence tools to create reports and dashboards
  • Deliver custom data analytics solutions for ad hoc requests
  • Serve as a technical partner for compiling, cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing data related to assigned projects
  • Work with leadership to set and deliver on reasonable expectations for deliverables
  • Prepare summaries of important insights to communicate to senior leadership
  • Diagnose and respond to service desk requests regarding data integrity and functional or interactive issues in existing and future dashboards quickly and effectively
  • Identify appropriate sources for data deliverables in collaboration with Data Management groups
  • Foster an institute-wide analytic community of practice by training users and educating analysts, data stewards, business stewards and analytics consumers
  • Remain open-minded about data exploration, vet work with the support of team members and ensure accuracy of all reports before delivering end-results
  • Contribute to institute-wide stewardship of data through analysis of existing reports and data sources and discussions with institute leaders
  • Escalate issues, concerns, and problems which may hinder achievement of deadlines and or/ accomplishments of responsibilities to the attention of the COBA leadership promptly
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in a STEM field required.

Minimum Experience:

1 year experience or Master's degree in a STEM field. Tableau experience preferred.

License/Certification/Registration:

Tableau certification required within 6 months of hire.

  • In addition, the COBA Analyst must have excellent communication skills and ability to engage and educate the analytic community on how to leverage the variety of data sources
  • Proficient with using SQL to query, manipulate, and organize data from relational databases required
  • Ability to document and resolve technical issues with existing reporting, as well as ability to document work and communicate progress to others
  • Competent with Microsoft Office suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, etc.)
  • Ability to quickly and comfortably learn new software tools
  • Must be able to function with the support of their manager in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities
  • Must be flexible in coordinating complex activities that are often subject to rapid or extensive changes and be able to prioritize urgent requests
  • Exceptional service orientation and attention to detail
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Able to set appropriate expectations, discuss and present results in informal settings, share ideas accurately and communicate them effectively, both in writing and verbally with supervisory oversight.
