The STEM Instructional Coach at Hackett Elementary serves as part of the Leadership team that supports teachers and administrators within the school to design and deliver high quality curriculum using evidence-based practices and to ensure that students' learning experiences are engaging and rigorous. The STEM Instructional Coach dialogues with teachers within the STEM content areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) about their instructional practices and planning in order to further each individual teacher's development. He or she works as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning through regularly scheduled classroom observation and feedback sessions, support of curriculum and lesson design, planning and delivery of professional development. The STEM Instructional Coach promotes student engagement and collaboration by connecting the dots among instructional best practices, learning environment and tools for student-centered learning experiences.
The roles and responsibilities of the STEM Instructional Coach include:
  • Serve as a resource in identifying appropriate research-based instructional strategies and interventions to improve STEM achievement for students across content areas
  • Operate as an advocate for and supporter of inquiry and problem-based learning
  • Provide guidance and coaching to teachers on educational and instructional methodology related to inquiry and the implementation of project-based curriculum
  • Facilitate the development, implementation, and communication of a shared vision of learning that reflects excellence and equity for all students
  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of curricular resources for STEM (including essential curriculum, local assessments, technology integration and resources to support all learners) that are aligned with local, state, and national standards.
  • Monitors student achievement and follows up on plans to increase student proficiency.
  • Models the use of technology as an enhancement to student and staff learning.
  • Identification of the school teaching and learning needs, barriers and weaknesses by analyzing student data, and organizing and implementing problem-solving actions with teachers (in teams and individually) to refine their knowledge and skills.
  • Primary support for teachers will include, but not be limited to, in-class coaching, observing, modeling of instructional strategies, guiding teachers in analysis of student work, developing lesson plans with teachers based on student needs, supporting data analysis, supporting the integration of technology, co-planning with teachers, and supporting students through digital literacy and conducting classroom walkthroughs.
  • Assistance in collaborative development of district-wide diagnostic and benchmark assessments.
  • Establish and maintain confidential relationships with teachers. The conversations and interactions that the coach has with teachers must always remain confidential so that a high level of trust is created and maintained between the teacher and the coach.
  • Performance of additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Literacy Instructional Coach and building leadership team.
Bachelor's degree in Education, preferable with an emphasis in science, technology or mathematics. Wisconsin teaching certificate. Instructional coaching experience preferred Masters degree preferred. Minimum 5 years' experience teaching, with a record of successfully impacting student achievement and working successfully with students who have the greatest needs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners. Significant experience with STEM related curriculums and the integration of the CCSS in the development of daily lesson planning. Knowledge of current best-practice in inquiry and STEM/STEAM education Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback. Proven ability in using student-level data to guide instructional decisions. Demonstrated expertise in oral and written communication. Strong interpersonal skills. Models continual improvement, demonstrates lifelong learning, and applies new learning to help all students achieve. Demonstrates evidence of professional growth, including leadership and participation in a wide range of significant professional development activities.
