Job Description

The Assistant Director for Venture Out provides leadership and management to the university's comprehensive outdoor recreation program called Venture Out. The Assistant Director will provide direct oversight of the rental and retail center, team building program, trips and adventure program, co-curricular and custom program development and the Venture Out Challenge Course. This position supervises all outdoor/adventure recreation staff, which includes 1 full-time Coordinator, 1 part-time Coordinator, and over 40 program leads and assistants. Specifically, this position will provide supervision of program operations/logistics while leading and evaluating selected programs (i.e. trips, clinics, workshops, training, and challenge course and team building facilitation); recruit, supervise, train, evaluate, and schedule Venture Out student staff members; facilitate office operations in rental, retail, climbing wall staffing and reservation coordination; oversee routine promotion and tailored social media/marketing of all adventure trips, clinics, challenge course and other programs; work to recruit and develop custom programs for specialized communities. This position is an integral part of the department leadership team, collaborating with fellow Assistant Directors and senior leadership to enhance the quality of life for the university community by educating and encouraging participation in activities that promote healthy lifestyle; creating inclusive spaces and social interactions for all; determination; and leadership skills.

Required Qualifications

* Master's degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Outdoor Recreation, Higher Education, or related field.
* A minimum of three years of progressive experience in outdoor/adventure recreation in a collegiate, government, or commercial/private setting.
* Two years of graduate assistant experience will be equivalent to one year of professional experience.
* Demonstrated experience in the successful implementation and evaluation of high quality outdoor recreation trips and challenge course programs.
* Demonstrated experience in preparing and managing budgets, annual plans, inventory, and risk management.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate and develop effective partnerships in a diverse setting.
* Demonstrated group leadership development and delivering an excellent customer experience.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to deliver presentations and speak publicly.
* Knowledge and ability to effectively use technology systems that support outdoor recreation program management and sales.
* Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certification.
* At least two industry certifications in Climbing Wall Management, Swift Water Rescue, rock climbing, caving, paddling, whitewater rafting, Leave No Trace and/or outdoor ethics (CWI, SPI, ACA kayak instructor, ACA Stand Up Paddleboard, LNT Educator, etc)

Preferred Qualifications

* Recognized experience at the collegiate level in the development, administration, and evaluation of outdoor recreation and adventure programs.
* Knowledge of local and regional outdoor adventure opportunities.
* Marketing and business management experience/training.
* Previous experience teaching for-credit, academic courses related to outdoor recreation and
physical activity.
* Previous experience working with a recreation based rental and sales center with a cash handling
plan and PCI compliance.
* Certification in Wilderness First Responder (WFR-Instructor) Instructor Trainer; Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) training or background;
* Three or more certifications in Climbing Site Management, Swift Water Rescue, rock climbing, caving, paddling, whitewater rafting, Leave No Trace and/or outdoor ethics (CWI, SPI, AMGA, PCIA, ACA kayak instructor, ACA Stand Up Paddleboard, LNT Educator, etc)
