Job Summary
With a matrixed reporting relationship to the Campus CNO and Exec Dir-Clinical Education, the RN-Nursing Specialty Consultant advances nursing practice to achieve optimal outcomes by assuring nurses and nursing personnel utilize evidence-based practices to meet the multifaceted needs of specific patients and/or populations. This role focuses on reinforcement / support of practice at the bedside as care is delivered to patients. The RN-Nursing Specialty Consultant participates in systematic quality improvement and safety initiatives related to nursing practice and serves as a subject matter expect in the specific area of nursing.Accountabilities
Clinical Nursing Practice 25%
- Supports new graduate nurses in clinical practice in the first year of practice post-Nurse Residency.
- Reviews all new clinical practice changes monthly and supports nurse managers to ensure all nurses have applied to practice.
- Advises staff in safe practice, critical thinking, problem solving, care planning, assessing, implementing, evaluating outcomes and opportunities for improvement - in keeping with regulatory requirements, scope of practice, Nurse Sensitive Indicators, and cost effectiveness.
- Promotes standardization and consistency in the electronic medical record documentation.
- Analyzes data related to quality, safety, & patient outcomes and recommends & implements action plans & interventions to address.
- Assumes accountability for achieving campus outcome goals inclusive of Nurse Sensitive Indicators, Patient Experience, and Nursing Retention through support of nursing practice.
- Provides just in time training based on changes in practice, root cause analysis, and code debriefings at the unit level.
Collaboration/Consultation 25%
- Collaborates with patients/families, nursing teams, providers and other health care professionals in development of practice solutions.
- Provides expert specialty consultation related to complex patient care needs and health system needs.
- Participates in interdisciplinary root cause analyses and action plan development/implementation.
- Serve as a subject matter expert.
- Collaborates with Clinical Education to conduct needs assessments, identify facility clinical education requirements, communicate training and education requests.
Patient Care Advocate 20%
- Participates in the design and implementation of evidence based, cost-effective interventions including advanced nursing therapies to meet the needs of the complex patient.
- Guides nursing inter-professional teams in the formulation of patient care management plans for clinically complex patients or families.
Evidence Based Practice 15%
- Reviews literature and research to ensure best practice in the specialty area.
- Assesses the nursing practice environment and processes for improvement opportunities.
- Audits the evidence related to new products to advance nursing practice, improve patient outcomes in a cost effective manner.
- Develops, revises and reviews policies, procedures, and plans of care to ensure alignment with current evidence based practice to provide consistency and drive performance outcomes.
- Mentors nurses and nursing staff in using evidence-based practice principles in practice.
Performance Management 10%
-Facilitates individual, team and organizational performance management which include competency development and evaluation at the facility level
-Change management processes
-Performance consultation and mentoring of staff as related to clinical practice.
Collaboration with Clinical Education to conduct needs assessments, identify facility clinical education requirements, communicate training and education requests. 5%
Minimum Requirements
Education - Master's of Science in Nursing(MSN)
Experience - 3 years nursing experience in specialty area
Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina
Valid driver's license, an acceptable three-year motor vehicle record as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart, and a certificate of auto insurance.
Certification in area of clinical specialty is preferred
