Reverse Translation is an important capability we recently created to extract maximum value from our clinical studies and other clinical-facing data to inform our early pipeline in oncology and cell therapy. The Reverse Translation Scientist role is an exciting new role within the Precision & Translational Medicine (PTM) function in the Oncology Therapeutic Area Unit (OTAU) at Takeda. 

As a Reverse Translation Scientific leader in Oncology Precision & Translational Medicine (PTM), you will provide scientific leadership and research planning to maximize the utilization of human and clinical study data to inform and accelerate the discovery and development of new drug candidates in Oncology and Cell Therapy in the preclinical and clinical stages. This is a matrixed role, responsible for partnering with the Oncology Drug Discovery Unit (ODDU), scientific leaders in Precision & Translational Medicine, Global Product Teams, physician-scientists, and scientific project teams to inform and support drug development strategy, target identification and validation, patient selection, Go/No-Go inflection points and business opportunities.

This role reports to the Reverse Translation Development Lead in PTM and works closely with functional line leadership to develop reverse translational and biomarker plans as part of Takeda's Asset Strategies through all stages of clinical development.

How you will contribute:
  • Partner with Oncology DDU discovery research, Redirected Immunity programs, and physician-scientists in designing and executing Reverse Translational research to inform and accelerate assets in early drug development, helping de-risk clinical development and increase the probability of success.  
  • Lead Reverse Translational Biomarker strategy development and execution to inform Takeda's pre-clinical space and evolving pipeline, business opportunities, differentiation of assets, repurposing opportunities, and internal and external partnership opportunities.
  • Lead timely execution of reverse translation & biomarker plans to inform program decisions with internal and external collaborators via working as a part of successful multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in oncology disease area strategy development as needed.
  • Represent Reverse Translation on assigned project teams in Oncology and Cell Therapy. Provide strategic, technical, and scientific leadership for the progression of programs from discovery research to clinical development and contribute as a subject-matter expert for overall asset strategies as needed.
  • Establish and drive key external collaborations, and maintain a scientific dialog with external thought leaders and clinical translational experts in medical, academic, and regulatory communities in support of reverse translational strategies and activities.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of the research and development efforts from academic institutions and competitor biopharmaceutical companies; stay up to date with the literature.
  • Manage the preparation and review of the Reverse Translation Research Plan. Evaluate and use state-of-the-art scientific tools and ensure the implementation of cutting-edge technologies to drive innovation in the execution of the Reverse Translation strategy.
  • Interphase with leadership, report on project progress and address emerging needs. Author study reports.
  • Support Business Development efforts by evaluating potential in-licensing opportunities and serve as a liaison with external partners, organizations, consultants, and university representatives.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in a scientific discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in translational biomarker research.
  • Experience in Oncology and/or Cell Therapy translational research.
  • Experience in AML/ NSCLC/ CRC malignancies preferred.
  • Recognized expertise in biomarker discovery and development and translational medicine as demonstrated by publications, and presentations in leading meetings.
  • Experience in drug discovery and/or development.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Strong leadership abilities and proven ability to lead a team within a matrix organization as well as to work independently.

Base Salary Range: 130200.00 to 186,000.00 Employees may also be eligible for Short-Term and Long-Term Incentive benefits. Employees are eligible to participate in Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, 401(k), Charitable Contribution Match, Holidays, Personal Days & Vacation, Tuition Reimbursement Program, and Paid Volunteer Time Off. 

The final salary offered for this position may take into account a number of factors including, but not limited to, location, skills, education, and experience.
