Job Summary

Central Washington University is recruiting a Dean to join our College of Business team in Ellensburg, Washington. This role is an important member of our team as they are the chief administrator of the College of Business for the University. The role is a campus-based position, which means you get to see the lives you are impacting. We're offering a salary, depending on experience, from $170,000 -$220,000 annually plus the awesome CWU benefits.

The College of Business is proud of its diversity in the faculty and student body. There are approximately 1350 students (many of them first generation) in the College, 45 Full-Time faculty (37 T/TT) and 21 quarterly instructors. The College offers diverse undergraduate programs: the BSBA (7 specializations), BS degrees (Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Personal Financial Planning), a BAS (supply chain) and a graduate program in Accounting (MPA). It is a collegial environment where faculty are dedicated to student learning while pursuing scholarship. Faculty and staff are innovative with curriculum planning and student engagement. The College is in good-standing with the AACSB, and has begun work on its next review (in AY 2025-6) with creating new Mission and strategic plan. The Role:

The dean is the chief administrator of the College of Business. The dean leads and manages change, ensures inclusive and ethical practices, allocates college resources, and models student-centered decision-making. Specifically, the dean is responsible for the following activities: program planning, budget management, personnel actions, faculty /staff development, curriculum delivery, planning for facilities and equipment, departmental operations, strategic planning, fund-raising, and responsiveness to students at all the educational sites where the college provides instruction. Academic departments reporting to the dean are: Accounting (including Master of Professional Accountancy), Economics, Finance & SCM, and Management.

The dean collaborates closely with the administration, support services, faculty, staff, and students of the university, community agencies, and the general public. The dean provides leadership in advancing the college among its many constituencies, and in positioning the college to respond successfully to the challenges and opportunities of contemporary higher education. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

Job Duties

Curriculum Development and Management:

Provide encouragement and support
- Plan, develop, assess, and improve college curricula, including General Education curricula.
- Prepare effective catalog descriptions.
- Compile, review, and act on information gathered for assessment and accreditation (specialized programs and university-level).
- Deliver face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
- Lead implementation of high impact practices in curricula.

Planning and Policy Development
- Lead in the development, delivery, and evaluation of high-quality academic programs in departments and affiliated degree programs of the college.
- Lead the college's academic, strategic, and development planning efforts.
- Develop, in consultation with department chairs, policies and procedures to guide the functions of the college.
- Establish and oversee committees to facilitate the affairs of the college.

Budget Management
- Plan and control expenditures within established budget.
- Expand and diversify revenue through both tuition and non-tuition driven activities, programs, and strategies.
- Oversee college budget committee and ensure that chairpersons and staff receive necessary training and professional development.

Resource Development
- Collaborate with the Director of Development as well as University Advancement in order to lead college efforts to raise funds from sources external to the university.
- Support faculty efforts to secure extramural funding.
- Plan and monitor the use of funds held in the CWU Foundation in support of faculty development and other programmatic needs in the College of Business.

Student Development
- Work with college departments to enhance academic experiences of students enrolled in college courses and programs.
- Promote and facilitate faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative activity, and other high impact practices.
- Work with college departments on strategic recruitment and retention efforts.
- Work with the alumni engagement coordinator, Office of Alumni Affairs, and Office of Career Services to expand alumni mentoring and both career and graduate education preparation.
- Oversee student advising activities.

Human Resource Development
- Recommend appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure, and compensation changes for faculty.
- Review faculty teaching and advising loads, committee assignments, and professional activities.
- Serve as appointing authority for the College of Business, with responsibility for recruitment, selection, and evaluation of college faculty and staff.
- Encourage and implement plans for faculty and staff regarding development, professional growth, and mentoring.
- Mediate and resolve conflicts involving faculty, staff, and students within the college.
- Support and promote the principles of equal opportunity and diversity throughout the college and its programs and activities.
- Directly supervise associate dean, administrative specialist and Dean's office support staff. Shared supervision of Director of Development and Alumni Engagement Coordinator.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess all the following qualifications and competencies:

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a discipline associated with programs represented in the College of Business.
  • A record of teaching and scholarly/creative accomplishments suitable for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor in an academic department within the College of Business.
  • Demonstrated pattern of extensive and successful leadership in an institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated experiences establishing and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence skills and behaviors including adaptability to change, empathy, self-reflection, conflict management and resolution, and the ability to build authentic bonds and create an atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation.
  • Design or implementation of new curricular programs and/or recruitment strategies that resulted in increased student enrollments.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with AACSB standards of accreditation, ideally with preparation of accreditation reports and preparation for accreditation reviews.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and experiences.
  • OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

In addition, the most competitive candidates for the position will also possess some of the following:

  • A track record of identifying, developing, expanding, and sustaining public and private partnerships and fund-raising from sources external to the university.
  • Experience in fostering collaboration between academic programs and/or business partners to create educational experiences for students.
  • Experience in developing & managing online and graduate programs and managing multiple instruction sites.
  • Experience with the development and implementation of budgets in a higher education environment.
  • A transparent and approachable style of leadership, coupled with the ability to make decisions respectfully and with the highest levels of integrity.
  • Life experiences that demonstrate an ability to contribute to CWU's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students through various activities.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: $170,000 - $220,000 annually, dependent upon qualifications and experience

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch) / Evening or weekend work may be required

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
