DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray to over 43,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of a diverse team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS oversees the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to self examination, peer review, and quality control through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

The Student Health Physician 4 Per Diem (MD/DO) is responsible for providing comprehensive primary health care services for acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, primarily for adolescent and young adult patients in both primary care and urgent care setting. The Physician will perform minor surgery, patient examination, evaluation, treatment and follow up care for both acute and chronic illness. The Physician will order appropriate lab and radiological testing and interpret test results. The Physician will manage gynecological healthcare including assessment, treatment, screening and counseling for Family Planning.

The Physician will assess and provide treatment and counseling for mental health disorders. The Physician will provide patient education and counseling regarding general health maintenance and preventive recommendations. The Physician will prescribe medication accurately and appropriately. The Physician will provide professional supervision of nurse practitioners, instruct and educate trainees and/or staff and assist in public relations efforts. The Physician is required to complete compliance courses and programs that are mandated by UCSD and SHS policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess the legal requirements to practice medicine and surgery as determined by the Medical Board of California as evidence of a current valid license.

  • Ability to practice medicine and surgery by evidence of graduation from a class A accredited school of medicine with the degree of M.D. and/or D.O.

  • Board Certified in a Primary Care discipline.

  • Ability to prescribe controlled substances by evidence of a current valid Federal Controlled Substances Registration Certificate.

  • Current BLS certification.

  • Skill and knowledge in gynecologic, preventive care: Pap smears, BSE, contraception, STI prevention and treatment, and ability to perform pelvic examinations and participate in the management of family planning. Solid knowledge to assess patients'needs and determine appropriate course of medical care.

  • Skill in working with acute illnesses and injuries in an urgent care setting.

  • Demonstrate experience working an outpatient medical settings, (preferably at a student health service) with adolescent and young adult patients.

  • Skill to perform minor surgery and wound care.

  • Ability to work well and cooperatively with students and a diverse group of other people. Demonstrated skill in interacting with a diversity of personalities in a professional, informative, diplomatic, and courteous manner. Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.

  • Ability to supervise and provide consultation to nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care providers.

  • Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management. Demonstrated knowledge and use of electronic medical records system for proper and timely documentation of patient-related notes and accurate coding for billing.

  • Knowledge of community resources and public health requirements of the County of San Diego and the State of California.

  • Knowledge of campus and community agencies most frequently used in ambulatory care.

  • Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance, and demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others.   • As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems or patient or employee injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to work in various locations and hours, based on clinical and operational needs. Evening and weekend hours as scheduled.
  • Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $176,592 - $351,384 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $84.57 - $168.29

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
