QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:
- Being enrolled as an IRSC student and in good standing at a college;
- Must have achieved thirty (30) semester hours and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.;
- Ability to supervise and advise students participating in the IRSC Project Upward Bound one (1) week Summer Residential and six (6) week non-residential Summer Program;
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to communicate effectively with students, parents, Upward Bound personnel, and the public;
- Possess reasoning skills and be relied upon to utilize good judgment on issues relating to health and safety;
- Previous experience in working with disadvantaged and under represented student populations is preferred;
- Recommendation letters from three faculty or staff members are also preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential job functions and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Residing in The River Hammock apartments with the students Sunday evenings through Friday evenings;
- Creating a community environment conducive to the academic enhancement, personal growth, and development of Upward Bound students.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The specific duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- The Residence Assistant is expected to be available to Upward Bound students at The River Hammock apartments for the purpose of assisting them with personal concerns and problems.
- Acting as a communication link between students and the Upward Bound Director, Academic Coordinator/Counselor, other staff, and The River Hammock Residence Managers.
- Acting as a referral agent in acquainting students with all facilities and services on the campus. Remaining sensitive to subtle mood changes and erratic behavior that may be exhibited by the students.
- Overseeing students in the evening hours to ensure general safety and compliance of program rules.
- Overseeing students to ensure that grooming and apartment safety/sanitation rules are followed. Managing students' daily schedule of activities.
- Assisting in the process of identifying student needs and interests.
- Assisting in coordinating and providing oversight of students during planned Upward Bound activities.
- Assisting with check-in registration and check-out procedures.
- Helping to maintain an efficient and effective operation.
- Assisting with physical training/team sports/leisure activities, etc.
- Conducting safety, curfew, and maintenance inspections.
- Inspecting all rooms with participating students daily and at the end of the program.
- Also providing impromptu inspection when necessary.
- Handling minor problems and referring all others to the appropriate Upward Bound staff or River Hammock Manager.
- Monitoring students during classes.
- Overseeing students at recreational activities, field trips, and outings.
- Providing assistance with daytime and evening programs as needed.
- Assisting other Residence Assistants as needed.
- Completing other duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of the program and assigned by the Director and Academic Coordinator.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
