Position Information
Under the direction of the Police Lieutenant, the Sergeant is responsible for supervising Patrol Officers while maintaining the chain of command within the department. The Sergeant directs law enforcement operations in the field; manages the day-to-day activities of sworn police officers to ensure the adherence to policies and procedures, regulations, orders, and laws; and provides leadership and supervision of a unit within the department by enforcing regulations and policies for assigned personnel. The Sergeant also inspects the work of subordinates, provides performance coaching and feedback during performance evaluations; implements training to meet professional development needs; and takes corrective action when necessary to protect the employee's welfare, the department's integrity, and the community's safety. In the absence of a ranking officer, the Sergeant also assumes leadership command of the department and performs patrol and collateral duties as required.

If a qualified pool of internal candidates is not identified, qualified external candidates may be considered at the discretion of the hiring department. Additionally, a skills assessment will be required for consideration and this position has multiple openings.

Solid ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity.
Ability to work rotating shifts in all weather conditions and during extended periods during disaster or civil disorder.
Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and possess a valid California Driver's License.
Solid knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions.
Solid knowledge of use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment or tools.
