AbbVie Postdoctoral Fellows serve as technical experts who investigate, identify, develop, and optimize new methods / techniques to address critical project needs. Participants continuously seek to improve existing laboratory methods and processes, read and adapt literature to accomplish assignments, and demonstrate mastery of a broad range of experimental techniques and methods of data analysis.

The Postdoctoral Program is designed for true investigational and experimental research. Participants will be mentored by renowned industry scientists and collaborators at AbbVie and focus on delivering cutting-edge advancements in Discovery, Development Sciences, and BioPharma. This enriching training program offers a balance of structured learning and work experience which fosters a learning environment to advance individual development, and offers accessibility to high-level knowledge-building across the drug development continuum.

We are seeking scientists from key U.S.-based academic institutions within preferred areas of science for this unique 2-3 year assignment. Participants will build a solid career foundation in the pharmaceutical industry while building the AbbVie brand as an employer of choice for scientific talent.

Role Overview:

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join an academic-style environment within the Oncology Discovery Research team to elucidate the structure/function of key tumor suppressor genes. The aim of this research is to identify and functionally characterize missense mutations misrepresented in patients. Efforts from the Postdoctoral research plan will be critical for the continued evolution of Target Identification, Evaluation, and Validation processes.

The Postdoc will have the unique opportunity to embed into both AbbVie’s Oncology Discovery Research organization and the cutting-edge Genomics Research Center. Research results will provide multiple opportunities for external recognition and are expected to be published in high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals.


  • The Postdoc will design and establish relevant methods for ‘at scale’ characterization of structure function using CRISPR/Cas approaches (including base editor technologies and indel mutagenesis screens).
  • Subsequently establish robust phenotypic and biochemical assays to validate hits from initial screens in relevant cell models.
  • Focus on developing models to study genetic aberrations and associated pathways and their effect on cell death phenotypes.
  • Generate and execute novel hypotheses while maintaining a high level of productivity in the lab. Formulate conclusions and design follow-on experiments based on multidisciplinary data.
  • Participate in weekly meetings to establish a working relationship across therapeutic teams in Discovery.
  • Exercise creativity, innovative thinking, and calculated risk-taking in conducting research projects in collaboration with a diverse community of scientists across multiple disciplines.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Biochemistry, or a related field with experience in functional genomics.
  • Extensive experience in cell culture, in cell-line technologies, and cell-based models of human disease.
  • Experienced in manipulation and perturbation of cell lines with tool compounds, biologics, and functional tools e.g., CRISPR-Cas9 and shRNA/RNAi technologies (e.g., demonstrated with relevant publications).
  • Proficient in basic statistical analysis such as MS Excel, GraphPad, PRISM, and others.
  • Record of scientific initiative, creativity, innovation, and adaptability in research activities.
  • Demonstrated ability of independently designing/executing experiments, interpreting data, and identifying appropriate follow-up strategies.
  • Excellent project management skills. Ability to multitask and work within timelines.
  • Ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated scie ntific writing skills evidenced by a strong publication record a nd strong verbal communication skills.
  • Global mindset to thrive in a diverse culture and environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a wide range of molecular biology basic techniques, including but not limited to nucleic acid isolations, PCR, and gene expression methods.
  • Proficiency in the safe handling of transduction agents, including lentiviruses. Knowledge or experience with downstream analysis and interpretation of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data.
  • Prior experience with computational platforms such as R.
