General Information
The Talent Development Department of James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for the Professional Development Specialist (PDS) position. The PDS provides leadership toward staff development as part of the Talent Development Department, in the Human Resources, Training and Performance Unit. The PDS is part of a team of five who provide instructional design, administrative oversight, instructor-led training, event management, marketing, and organizational development facilitation for classified staff, wage employees, and administrative and professional faculty. The PDS is primarily responsible for program planning, content development and delivery, and recruiting and developing Volunteer Facilitators. The Talent Development Department has three well-equipped and dedicated facilitation spaces.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Professional Development Specialist (PDS) facilitates unique workshops and departmental retreats and creates new workshops that enhance the performance of staff as they work to support the JMU mission. The PDS applies knowledge of business needs assessment to establish a training calendar that provides a range of practical skills and principles that relate to the needs of both individuals and managers.

The PDS increases the workshop delivery capacity of Talent Development through identification of opportunities for blended-learning content creation, creative recruiting and use of Volunteer Facilitators, collaboration with other JMU Divisions, and recruiting and supervising a Graduate Assistant.

For all TD curated content, the PDS sets clear learning objectives, creates and maintains high-quality materials based on Adult Learning Theory principles, and evaluates outcomes for impact to performance.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
  • Either a master's degree or comparable experience in human resource development, adult education, or a related field.
  • Experience creating and delivering customized instructor-led professional development interventions.
  • Experience overseeing and facilitating organization development (OD) and change management interventions for diverse groups.
  • Working knowledge of and experience using adult learning theory in creating and facilitating professional development activities for adult learners.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience recruiting, developing, and supporting volunteers.
  • Experience managing and creating eLearning modules and using electronic learning management systems.
  • Skills related to Microsoft Excel and Outlook.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
