We're hiring an Intern, Community Health - CPR Focus in the SouthWest region.

Under close supervision and mentorship of the Business Development Manager for CPR in the SouthWest region, students will apply classroom learning to practical problems and disparities in lifesaving CPR, Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), and Cardiac Emergency Response initiatives. Throughout this process students will develop and strengthen skills such as: research methods, health communication, and community engagement.

Students will improve their existing skills by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in diverse communities by developing and implementing outreach strategies to multicultural and racially diverse communities, rural communities, and Indigenous nations. The goal is to reach these communities and to be a force in helping build an age-diverse Nation of Lifesavers.

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 1/16/2024 – 5/3/2024
  • Fully remote, must be located in one of the following states: AR, OK, TX, NM, CO, WY; preferably TX
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.
  • Opportunity to explore a career-path with a highly regarded voluntary health/service organization.
  • Be involved in a core initiative of the American Heart Association in creating a “Nation of Lifesavers,” with the goal of doubling survival rate in out-of-hospital-cardiac arrests by 2030.
  • Learn Hands-Only CPR and how to present/demonstrate it.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Support work around community CPR and its products/resources, the Chain of Survival, understanding of AED use and routine maintenance, and the adoption of a robust and formalized Cardiac Emergency Response Plan in organizations.
  • Using a health equity lens, assist Business Development Manager for CPR in the SW Region with research, implementation and discovery process of CPR/lifesaving needs in communities throughout the SW US Region.
  • Understand the benefits of strategic partnerships between health care professionals, hospitals, businesses, private & public schools, and community-based organizations to improve population health and create a sustainable environment of cardiac safety.
  • Support Market implementation of hands-only CPR education through community-based events with staff and volunteers.
  • Attend internal and external meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events as necessary.
  • All other projects as advised by the Business Development Manager and the Administrative Assistant for CPR.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years educational or equivalent experience in health or public health courses with an interest or experience in public policy and political institutions. CPR certification is helpful but not required.
  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
  • Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Minimum availability of 25 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
