Position Title: Public Education Community Organizer 

LOCATION:   Ability to work on site currently hybrid  Min: 3 days/week  in Sterling, Virginia Office

POSITION TYPE:  Full-Time 

New Virginia Majority (NVM), Virginia’s leading civic engagement organization, builds power in working-class communities of color across the Commonwealth. New Virginia Majority is currently seeking a Public Education Community Organizer to support our integrated local work across Loudoun County. This position will report to the Loudoun Campaign Coordinator.

Responsibilities: 

  • Support the implementation of our strategic approach to building power in Loudoun County, VA.
  • Lead organizing, coalition and policy work supporting public education in Loudoun County.  Such work may address inequities in achievement and discipline, support curriculum that addresses Virginia’s history of racism, and support collective bargaining for public education employees. 
  • Create a summer organizing institute and hold 2023 Back To School Listening Sessions with parents, students, and educators. 
  • Create actions, training, and mobilization opportunities in order to activate members, staff, and volunteers to support public education and pro-public education education issue campaigns. 
  • Build allies and alliances with civic, community, labor, and religious organizations.
  • Develop the political consciousness of leaders through popular education, reflection, leadership development and developing appropriate educational materials. 
  • Work with core leaders to develop campaign plans, strategize, and implement plans.
  • Mobilize and track engagement of members and activists at various events and field opportunities in a database.
  • Support research and policy development relevant to of New Virginia Majority’s agenda
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications: 

  • Committed to New Virginia Majority’s mission of social, racial and economic justice.
  • Experience with grassroots organizing and coalition building.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a variety of relationships on multiple levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines; able to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy.
  • Self-motivated and works well both independently and on a team.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to take direction and constructive feedback.
  • Driver’s license and access to a car.
  • A minimum one-year commitment to the position.
  • Experience organizing communities of color is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits: 

Salaries are competitive. Salary range is $45,000 - $48,000, commensurate with experience, and comes with an excellent benefits package.

NVM covers 100% of the individual cost and 75% of the family cost for medical, dental, life, and short-term disability insurance for full time employees. Additional benefits include family and medical leave, retirement program with employer match, accruable paid vacation and sick leave, and monthly transportation and cell phone allowances.
