Minimum Qualifications:

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of research computing approaches and issues, particularly in the field of bioinformatics.
  • Established experience in working with, and supporting faculty researchers, their students and post-docs, in the fields of life sciences, with emphasis in bioinformatics.
  • Graduate degree(s) in a computational science, physical science, computer science or engineering field.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (such as C++, C, Fortran, etc.).
  • Minimum of five years’ computational research experience using a Linux-based programming and computing environment.
  • Proficiency in deployment and support of scientific applications.
  • Experience with container technologies (such as Docker, Singularity)
Position Summary:

This position is part of a team, which supports the advanced research computing needs of more than 340 research groups at UGA. The GACRC’s primary resources include Linux high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, and multi-tiered network attached storage devices, supported through a high-speed InfiniBand fabric. This position will be responsible for interacting with the GACRC user community, addressing numerous support issues that will facilitate the efficient use of the GACRC resources by UGA faculty members, post-docs and students, involved in the fields of Life Sciences, most notably in bioinformatics.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
  • Proficiency in one or more scripting languages (such as Python, Perl, Bash, etc.).
  • Strong experience working in a Linux environment.
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills.
  • Be able to function as part of an interactive team while demonstrating self-initiative to achieve project’s goals and the GACRC’s mission.
  • Have strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.

User Assistance

  • Respond to GACRC user requests of installation or update of scientific software packages, libraries and workflows. Validate installation then produce technical documentation according to current GACRC standards.
  • Assist GACRC users in troubleshooting computational jobs, including handling elaborate pipelines and workflows.
  • Assist GACRC users with issues of data management.

  • Maintain current knowledge and skills in relevant areas including: programming languages, tools, computational methodologies, best practices for large-scale data management, etc.

Participation in GACRC Training Activities

  • Provide direct assistance to GACRC users through hands-on workshops, tutorials and seminars, regarding the use of available systems, scientific application software, and training materials.
  • As a joint effort with the GACRC’s Support Team, develop and regularly update relevant training materials, to be made available to the GACRC community through web-based media.
